If people get offended by it, it's their problem. I don't see them changing names of their religion's holidays or special days. Why should we? I mean isn't it so that we should all accept each other's religion? For me It's Christmas and always will be Christmas, and if I can't say it , I will still say it. It's just sad it;'s even an issue. Don't people have anything better to do?

Should I weigh in? Some people's attitude towards Christmas is akin to a common European or third-world countries feeling towards America/American corporate culture. Namely, it seems to be very "in your face". I have my own culture, going back centuries, thank you very much. Don't need to see your MacDonalds and Starbucks and Coca-Cola everywhere I turn. Now, translate that from country-> religion, and maybe you can understand their point.

Additionally, in the US in particular, we have two clauses in our Constitution that are considered fundamental -- the freedom to worship as own chooses, and the separation between church and state (the prohibiton of promoting by government one particular religion over any other). And these are a balancing act. So, whereas the state can't stop you from, say, putting up a 50 ft tree in your front yard, and enough lights on your house or store or hotel to blind a polar bear (unless they can prove there's a compelling state interest), the same cannot be said for public places such as public schools, courthouses, airports, etc. (There are different legal tests for what's allowed and lwhat is not, which I won't get into here).

That being said, there are certainly "politically correct" dicta that are just plain silly. Snickie can't SAY, "Merry Christmas"? If that's a school policy, that is certainly not a policy justified by law, and in fact probably runs afoul of the free exercise clause, as well as the free speech clause (although schools are held to different standards in the eyes of the law, and I am not a lawyer). The school is probably just trying to cover themselves against some overly-litigious nutcases. Nonetheless, if true, it's probably actionable. But can a school have a concert and call it a Christmas one? No. Because that would be counter to the establishment clause.

OTOH, I can't stand it when businesses* have obvious Christmas displays and say "Happy Holidays". No. It's Christmas. Call it what is. Don't wimp out. I don't expect you to celebrate my holidays. Celebrate yours, and be proud of it.
(* and when governmental places do it, it's worse than wimping out. It's illegal)

As an Orthodox Jew living in the USA, I have no problem with people's displays of lights, creches, etc at this time of year. I find many of them pretty (others are just tacky...). I enjoy a lot of the music, too. But it should be enjoyed in the private/commercial sphere. Don't bring it into properties that belong to the public, that I pay taxes to support, that subtly proclaims, "you are merely tolerated here, for the moment, but you don't really belong."

(And no, I don't happen to agree with those muncipalities who put up symbols of all different faiths is some sort of ecumenical display. It should not be "all" (as if it really could be. Do you know how many religions there are out there?), it should be "nothing". My two cents)

I said before and I will say it again.. MERRY CHRISTMAS! I say this in celebration of my faith, not as an intended offense to anyone. You wish to celebrate your faith? I am all for it! Go ahead. (( Sticks and stones may break my bones, but 'words' will never hurt me? )) Each belief that we have determines who we are. If we all had the same belief, then it would be rather boring. I do not practice a specific religion, but I do have my faiths and beliefs. As a matter of fact, I love hearing about others!

I refuse to take Christ out of my celebration, that is my right, as you have the right to remove Him from yours.

Hmm I wonder, how many people do not believe in Christmas, but still accept the money given for the paid holiday?

Edit... Hmm I wonder, how many people do not believe in Christmas, Complain about, denounce it , but still accept the money given for the paid holiday? Still not quite what I mean.. but closer to the point

Me...

I was introduced to Christmas as part of my cultural heritage, and it seldom carried a religious connotation. It's just a holiday, and in which people exchange gifts. Thre is a Bible in my family, but it maybe four of five generations old now, and you would have to go back that far to find anyone with faith in it.

Incidentally... I don't bemoan people with this kind of faith or any other... I actually have my own, and live and lt live, I suppose :)

Public school staff and faculty have about as much freedom of speech as minors do, probably less because they influence minors. They are not supposed to associate themselves with any religious beliefs or theologies (including atheism), and they('re supposed to) get in trouble if the administration hears them talking about religion, but for some reason they only say it to the Christians (a majority here) and nothing to the atheists. I've a friend who goes to school in a different county, and her biology teacher reminds the students every other day (not literally, but you get what I mean) that he's an atheist, and while he keeps his language clean at school, he goes out in the real world and says any bad word he feels like saying, eff this, eff that, and he doesn't say "God bless you" because there is no God. And yet none of the administration has ever gotten on to him about it like they would if they found a teacher participating in a prayer session, even one led by a student. (Students can lead prayer groups and the like, but teachers and staff cannot. Well, that is, until somebody tries to sue a student for "forcing their religious influence on others" because they happen to hear them praying or whatever.)

So much for "separation of church and state". I think people are starting to interpret that to mean that the government has to have "no religious affiliation", which many people seem to define as "atheism" (which is wrong....).

I was going to go somewhere else with that, but my mom put on a movie and I got sidetracked. It's two-and-a-half hours later. lol

It hasn't hit me quite yet, but I'm done with school. Maybe it will come when grades are available because then I'll have proof that, hey, I finished this semester, I passed this semester (because I always keep it in the forefront of my mind that something could go horribly wrong), and now I've graduated. It feels weird to say I've graduated since I'm not bothering with all the hullabaloo. I don't even know when the graduation ceremony is, except that I think it was either tonight or tomorrow night. So I'm just...done.

And I'm not okay with that. I don't know how to be okay with that. I've been going to school my entire life. How do I just stop? In high school, that's what drove me to college in the first place. And I can feel that same thing creeping into my mind now, bringing thoughts of graduate school. When people pestered me, I always said that I hadn't ruled out grad school, but really I had and I just wanted them to leave me alone. But now? Now the semester is over and school is over and my life is over and I can't just stop. School is what I do. I'm good at school. I like school. I want to be in school.

And that's a big part of the problem. I never turned school into a step. It should be a step. But I didn't follow any sort of rational "I want to do this, so I'm going to take these classes and get this degree and go on to get this job." or even "Getting a degree will allow me to get a better job and make more money." Instead, I am a fucking idiot and I said, "Hey, this stuff is fascinating. I'm going to take these classes!"

Okay, and now maybe it's starting to hit me because I feel shaky internally. I think I was better off with it not having hit me, so I'm going to run off and find one thing that's kinda nifty and blow it all out of proportion until I'm ridiculously happy. Or...hell, maybe I'll just deal with it like a rational person, grieve briefly, and move the fuck on.

I'm going to go wash the dishes and cry, I think.

Workplace restrictions on expression are not limited to public schools. People get reprimanded or fired for breaking rules in any workplace. If rules are selectively enforced, then it is up to those who are affected to speak up. If students can't say, "Merry Christmas," I would be very surprised.

Christians in the US are not oppressed. You may have minor annoyances that come with living in a diverse society. QQ. Get over it.

Doug R. wrote:I've never understood the whole marching band thing. I get orchestras and stage bands, but putting funny clothes on people and making them carry their instruments around on a sports field, playing the same old stuff over and over,

It is athletic, though it's not defined as a sport by conventional definition. I mean, it's like....ultimate multitasking. I'm sure I've written this before, but it's... trying to keep your feet perfectly in time with great technique

Doug R. wrote:typically "band" versions of popular songs...It's beyond me. They usually don't even sound that good

No, those are stand tunes. lol
Edit: I can think of several bands in my district who actually do just make "band" versions of popular songs for their marching shows. It's not very original (there's a Pirates of the Caribbean show every year at FBA, for example).

Doug R. wrote:(you may have 15 different instruments, but really, I can only hear 4 of them tops.

This is what we call "heroes", where four or five different players, usually trumpets, overplay to make up for half of the section that doesn't play. It's pretty commonplace here, at my school anyway.
Doug R. wrote:Why do sports teams need bands anyway? They can play cooler music over the PA during touchdowns.

Are you kidding? Band helps spread school spirit! Fight song! War chant!
And at my school, our PA system would probably stay silent a lot if it were only used for touchdowns. Bands are helpful for keeping the other offense from being able to hear each other lol (we play when our team is on defense), intimidation, a non-violent way of letting the refs know they made a bad call lol, and there are actually some songs we play that our school enjoys and some of the spectators (other than the band parents I mean lol) get involved in.
And it's also beneficial for the football team to have the band at games because it means band parents come to the game, and that's their ticket money they rake in.

I'll finish replying later.

Maybe we've been spoiled. Who knows? It sometimes feels like that, in the push to be "religiously equal and tolerant and unbiased" as a nation, that they're trying to suppress Christianity (and Judaism). But, according to our Bible, which you people as readers of my forum posts may or may not believe in, Christians will be persecuted for their faith. It doesn't mean I can't rant about it (I mean, isn't that what this ROTD thread is for?).

I don't know what's going on in my subconscious right now, but I've been noticing a lot more of the Jewish discrimination at my school recently. Just horribly tacky jokes made by white males (usually Christians, which, quite frankly, disgusts me).

Kid: "*says something about Jews*"
Me: "I know a few Jews. I'm friends with some."
Kid: "Oh, I feel so sorry for you."
Me: "What?"
Kid: "I'm just kiddin'."
Me: "O....kay......" Walk away, Snickie. Walk away.

Being payed and getting days off is an entirely worldly business and doesn't concern religion at all, even though the dates of public holidays were often chosen to give people time to celebrate their religious holidays. Whether you do that though is up to you.

Personally, Christmas never had any religious connotations for me, but I still do like it a lot.

Here's my rant on x-mas:

The thing I hate about x-mas is the greed that erupts because of it. The ads come earlier every year (November 1st I saw the first x-mas ad of the year this year), Black Friday becomes blacker with people being maced for a 50 dollar savings on an x-box, and now it's so bad that x-mas greed (or should I call it holiday greed) is now even taking away other holidays for employees of merchandise stores as a result of having to miss out on Thanksgiving because they have to wake up at 10 pm to get to work opening Black Friday sales.

This greed is not just the fault of the big businesses, it's also the fault of the sheep who buy into this holiday crap.

America needs to wake the f up and reinvent what x-mas is about, cuz if Jesus saw this crap he would be sick.

I always wonder why religious people refer to God of Jezus with a capital H in the word Him... It's a demonstrative pronoun.. It NEVER has capital first letter when not being the first word of a sentence! Why al of a sudden now it does?

Christmas is not at all religious to me, just because some people replaced an old old tradition with sacrificies to several gods with another fairy tale and another god. It's a holiday but I don't mind calling it Christmas. And I let others believe what they do, whathever they call it.

There's a thing here that some high schoolers were talking about, called Cyber Monday. It's the Monday after Thanksgiving where online stores have awesome discounts on stuff from midnight to midnight. Some people will upgrade their computers just so they have a chance at getting some of the deals before their computers and the websites freeze from too much traffic.
