I always notice that when I play games and the chat has lots of lol in it. I almost use it in real life when I find something funny. Though that never actually happened.

I have a hard time finding funny things at the moment too. ;)

I'm not really big on grammer at all but if I'm playing with someone who doesn't even try to use capitals then I think their an idiot, which automatically influences how I view their charries.

Cool, 1) this thread is about characters that irritate yours, not characters that irritate you, and 2) if you are letting OOC trivialities like.. lowercases ( *facepalm* ) affect your characters, you aren't roleplaying correctly. That's as stupid a comment as saying 'I hate farmers in real life so all my characters are predisposed to hating farmers too in-game'. Take your OOC views out of it.. ESPECIALLY for reasons like the player isn't capitalising all their letters..

It's pretty pathetic to rag on someone who can't type properly. At least they're playing the game.. we need more players, not less, and comments whinging about their inadequate grasp on the English language is, as I said, pathetic.

Think about someone coming up to you and talking as the words are written and appear in text on your screen. Put yourself in the place of your character for a moment.A capital letter tends to be the beginning a sentence, and for me I've encountered players that do not capitalize nor do they punctuate the end of a sentence. Therefore, when they speak they annoy my character because s/he does not want to listen to someone talking as if they're having a nervous breakdown trying to get all of the words out before they run out of air.

They mentally would sound like this :

hellomynameischupaandilikefoodyesidoiwanttofarmforsomebutitseemstobeagainstthelawsheremayigathergoodwhodoispeaktoinordertogatherfood?

Someone who does not capitalize or punctuate except at the end of their sentence would "sound" like that to my character, and it becomes very very irritating.I am by no means perfect grammatically, or syntax wise either, but I do try.

Returner, characters and their players share the same mind, so your point #1 is not valid. Roleplaying is different than acting. While they can go hand in hand, they often don't. I can role-play but I can't act, so things that irritate me irritate my characters, so you're second point is also invalid. Acting is not a requisite to play. If you can act too, then good for you, you're an exception.

CrashBlizz, I agree with you 100%. The only reason for not using proper grammar and sentence structure is if you're using a mobile device. Otherwise, my characters assume that you're just gonna try to pwn them and will treat yours accordingly (usually ignore them or simply not offer them any opportunity in the town).

I take the lack of punctuation as speaking without pauses and the lack of capitalization as mumbling or monotonous speech, or very silent. If someone uses perfect punctuation but all lowercase letters, I would interpret them as having a very tiny voice. But often people who don't use capitalization are also lacking in punctuation. I have one character who used to write "i" lowercase and "Her" uppercase when referring to a certain person, since he saw himself as so much inferior to her, but eventually he got over it. But I don't think I used it in speech because people couldn't have heard the difference. I might also capitalize less if the character I'm playing is ill or very tired.

I often say "lol" when I'm amused by something but I pronounce it loll instead of el-oh-el.

Out of curiosity, how do you intrepret the players who capatalize the first letter of every word? I always have difficulty trying to figure out how that character is speaking.

I think such characters sound like they were saying each word as if it was a sole word, not in a sentence (like some poor artificial reader, who's only got whole word recorded, would do), so each word gettin a full stress that should be meant for the whole sentence.

I'm willing to forgive poor spelling/grammar - no one is perfect. I consider a complete lack of punctuation to be rude and lazy. It takes more work to read and interpret when everything runs together, and I'm often not willing to take the extra time to decipher their words if they can't be bothered to take a split second to use a period.

Capitalization...meh. It annoys me but I'm much more willing to work with that than the no punctuation thing. I think what bothers me most about it IG is that is reminds me of a chatroom rather than being immersed in the game, but not much you can do about it with people who use mobile devices to play. I've never thought about interpreting it as soft/timid speech, though. Maybe I would if I'd ever encountered a char who had a distinguishable pattern to it (like Seko's example of giving importance to others by using a capital letter). I'd bet 80% of the chars I've come across that don't capitalize anything are new or young players who either don't care or haven't yet figured out that Cantr isn't a chatroom.

One of my chars gets really annoyed by one who only emotes *smiles* and *winks* all the time. -ALL- the time, whatever it's happening around. At first I found it funny, but now my eyes hurt with each new *wink*. And no, I'm pretty sure that it's not a tic...

Yeah....I thought about emphasizing each word with the capitalization issue, but that is sooooo annoying to imagine! LOL Especially considering that every character I've come across that does this, always has paragraphs of information to share.
