Custom Projects
Custom projects such as "learning German" or "painting a painting or "practicing the flute" would be good.

Something like learning X language would be too abstract to be seen or heard, but things like drawing or playing music would make the world seem more lively. Rather than a project, I'd see it as a status message, since people can rp playing a flute while working on a project and if getting a custom project: playing a flute would prevent them from gathering resources, less people would be likely to use it.
Because Cantr is a multi-lingual game, freeform status messages would probably be out of the question because they would reveal a person's language group even if he never spoke and would be unreadable to people who don't know the language it was written in. However, if we had a whole table of translatable status messages and people could suggest new additions, that would get the job done and be less abusable.
My suggestion is that the user could choose a status message for their character, some of them could include an item in the character's inventory, and some could include a link to a person in the location. If the item in question stopped being in the inventory (crumbled away, was dropped, given away or used on a project) the status message would be cleared automatically, and if the person in question left the location, same thing. It would also be useful if it was possible to include items on the ground.
The user could define a duration ranging from 1 to 8 hours. The status would also be cleared if the character was attacked or dragged away or if they were in a vehicle that went on a road or undocked (at least if the emote included a person who now isn't in the location).
Suggestions for status messages:
General:
sleeping
snoring
writing
drawing
dancing
singing
running
wandering around
sitting on the ground (only available outside)
sitting on the floor (only available inside)
sitting on the deck (only available on ships)
lying on the ground (only available outside)
lying on the floor (only available inside)
lying on the deck (only available on ships)
curled up on the ground (only available outside)
curled up on the floor (only available inside)
curled up on the deck (only available on ships)
Emotional
happy
sad
angry
scared
amused
With an item in your inventory:
displaying #OBJECT#
holding #OBJECT#
hugging #OBJECT#
playing with #OBJECT#
playing #OBJECT# (limited to musical instruments)
With an object on the ground:
sitting on #OBJECT#
hugging #OBJECT#
holding onto #OBJECT#
With people:
hugging #PERSON#
brawling with #PERSON#
staying close to #PERSON#
holding onto #PERSON#
staring at #PERSON#
glaring at #PERSON#
Maybe if a status message includes a person or an object, it could check if the person or object is present when ever someone loads a page where the status message is displayed (I think they should be on the People page and on character pages). That way we wouldn't have to keep track of all the possible means a person can get separated from an object or another person.

I like the idea, by the way.

This is an excellent example of how this shouldn't be implemented.

I was thinking that if a person has a status message, they could be displayed on the people page like the custom descriptions you can give people. That way you could see everyone's status at once. Just add "he/she is" in front of the status message. They could also be in the info boxes you see when hovering the mouse cursor over someone's name.
