The ^ sign

I'm seeing a lot of "^"s when reading Esperanto texts. Is this supposed to be like that or is something likely wrong with my browser's character encoding?

No, it's intended. Some people don't have the right equipment to write ŝ,ĝ,ĵ and so on and write s^,g^,j^ instead. You will also encounter sx,gx,jx or sh,gh,jh.
