Gas Drills

Postby trexdino » Wed Jul 23, 2008 4:36 pm

I did a search and couldn't find anything to do with this. I searched under just plain gas so I hope there isn't anyhting else.

There are drills for hemitate, coal, there are limestone quarrys and stone quarrys, even oil derricks. What about a machine for getting gas? Right now gas is collected at 100 grams a day, and then with a gas-value, it is 300 grams a day.

So I suggest a gas drill or something like a drilling rig or gas well.

At first I thought... that is a dumb request why not use a gas oven... But then I noticed you said DRILL and I totally agreed.

So anyone else have any thought? Any complaints?

Gas is balanced as it is, in that it is competitive with other types of fuel but doesn't completely overshadow them. Making gas production radically more efficient would mean everything that uses gas would have to be rebalanced. That doesn't mean it shouldn't be done; I'm just saying that we can't JUST make gas drills and leave it at that.

I think it might be a cool idea to have gas production and propane refining made much easier, but require that all gas and propane be stored in expensive, pressurized metal containers - but this would require considerable programming.

I think perhaps a more general solution to fuel - for instance, measuring fuel purely by how much energy it produces per gram, and then making heat-using machines require a certain amount of energy rather than a certain amount of a specific fuel - would be more realistic and make things easier to balance. But this would require more programming, and the list of things to implement is already impossibly long.

There are already coal drills though. Making something like a gas drill could take a large amount of resources.

Since gas already gives larger yields for making both iron and steel it's clelarly better than digging coal manually, even with a pickaxe. The only thing better than gas with a gas valve is a coal drill. In order to not unbalance things completely the gas 'drill' would have to yield at the very most 450g or things would be very inflated.

I'm leaning towards saying no to this, unless it involves lowering the gas valve to 150-200 to compensate.
