The Captain of Marines was typically an officer of experience, moved from the Army. They were used to a life at sea but I am not sure if they could purchase commissions in the Marines like they could in the Army.
A Midshipman was the lowest officer rank in the british navy. Usually boys of 12-17 joined up from middle/upper class families. They had to take an exam to be promoted to Leiutenant, and only after years of experience. Unlike other officers, they were subjected to corporal punishment, but with the subtlety that beffitted a "young gentleman". I.E whipped with a cane below decks, wheras a normal seaman would be lashed with a nine tailed whip on deck in front of the entire crew. Sometimes, seasoned sailors who showed promising leadership qualities could be promoted to Warrant officers etc, which are the naval NCOs. If they excelled at this, they would be comissioned Midshipmen. As usual, if you were not from quality, the climb to the top was that much harder, although easier than in the army, where only an act of suicidal bravery could see a private soldier commissioned. even then they often did not fit in.
Note: Excuse me for my historical inaccuracies, this is just how i understand it all from things I have studied and read.

Calm down girls, RP aint started yet, this is still the signup phase!
Midshipmen are still officers, and do not mix with the crew or the marines. They are welcome in the Officer's mess, but have their own, and are still seen as very junior in the world of the Navy.
A few days more, and I will see or not if we have any sailors or marines... If not, I will make them NPCs to be commanded by relevant officers. This means we can have a full compliment of sailors...
I must ask at this point... no Godmoding.
Also, an addition to the 1D6 rule, I will also use a 1D6 to choose who kills the character. Highest score wins. In the case of the Marines, the target must have been killed by a musket shot, unless the ships have grappled each other to board.
With sailors and officers, unless the ship is boarded, the cannons kill the target. it is also possible to RP getting killed indirectly e.g. by falling wreckage.

Right, another day or two, and then I shall declare all of the rest of the open slots will become NPCs. It would be nice to have at least one of each a human!
