Thought or Rant of the day!!!

:shock: After what happened today, I'm concluding that my father is crazy. I'm posting this so that I can look back at this ages from now and remind myself why it's here in the first place. End of story.

my step dad hates cantr and got on my mothers nerves to the point i had to quit to shut him up. his reasons are to this day unexplained. it is basically because he never understood the game and a year went by and i was still playing it so he thought i had some kind of problem. the story is long and complicated.

so basically i lost some of the best characters i've ever had against my will for reasons that go far beyond OOC.....

i'll post my dead character list at some point. not sure when i will be able to get another account. and if i do i don't know what i will do with it. i already came up with an idea for a new favorite character but he needs to be in a certain town. and i need to be able to play the game without interuptions from my step dad. otherwise i might as well spawn sleepers and have them work and eat and never say a word.

Solfius, the point is I cannot create even one object. I have a console application where the creatures are stored in an array, there is a creation method for new creatures and everything, the only problem is the visual representation. In the console application, the field is drawn in ascii art but the whole idea of creating a graphical user interface is having graphical representation of the situation, not having to resort to incomprehensible lists of coordinates or character based simulation.

Wow, I'd like to know how accurately it can do that. Google has been able to recognize conjugated forms of words in Finnish but translating requires knowing the context, otherwise the results will be akin to "suck a donkey".

Thought of the day: Why does everyone always come back to Cantr? I played for 5 years-ish and was pretty heavily involved (especially OOC--GAB and such). I quit a year ago, and now I'm back (though probably just temporarily).

Another thought: perhaps Cantr actually has some kind of positive impact. I'm finally starting college at Vanderbilt in the fall and considering Cantr, I'm a little amused that I'm going to be majoring in political science (well, and music as a 2nd major, that has nothing to do with Cantr at all), with minors in computer science and philosophy... Maybe playing/administering/talking to other players in Cantr had an influence on that.

I've been noticing a lot more lately that emotes contain much more than just actions. It's really irritating to see thoughts, intentions, etc included in emotes. Could be just one or two players doing this and I've been lucky enough to have my chars in the same locations as theirs. If it's done on occasion to get the point across, I don't mind. Sometimes there's just no other way to describe an action, but there are some chars I see doing this nearly every time they are active. Is it acceptable to send someone an OOC message when you see this sort of thing or should I just let it go and get over it?

I really don't want to stifle anyone's RP, but emotes are meant to be visible actions, not your char's thoughts.


I figure I'm doing alright if this is the worst I have to rant about.

Why is it that couples in Cantr fill up the page with line after line of non-consequential voice-vomit, frolicking in the sand and whatnot, all in full view of the town.
Then the moment it turns sexual, it turns to whispers and it's assumed that the couple fall into another dimension where they can't be seen, even though they haven't moved from their spot.

Some of my chars have told people to go inside. One encountered a couple who were very open about things (even invited him to join them). There weren't any buildings at that location they could go in, so he told them to find a big rock or bush to do their thing behind and they finally complied by whispering. Guess in that situation, there would still be some disturbance even if they were out of sight. lol

It is really annoying to have a whole screen of nothing but whispering, I'd prefer people go inside if possible to have long private conversations (sexual or not).

Yeah, why is it so hard to go to a building when you realize you're going to be chatting for a while? It's not like everyone imagined you were having sex or planning a crime. There's nothing more annoying than having a character light up every other minute, going to check and finding out that it's just those whispers again. I bet if eavesdropping was implemented then people would start going inside. It's ridiculous how Cantr whispers are like pm's, no way of catching what's being said even if you were standing right next to the speakers. And in Cantr, everyone is standing in the same spot since towns are one-dimensional. It would be cool if the town was a small grid and people could hear stuff within a certain range. Then people could actually go to the beach or in the bushes and show others that they want privacy.

Another thing, I've been working on Flash lately and I noticed a couple of things that piss me off. First of all, when using components inside movie clips that are loaded in a scroll pane, for some reason some of the components only work in a part of the clips (or more like where they were first assigned) and their content appears blank when they are used elsewhere. The program can still read the content and it can be changed (if the text area / text input is editable) but you cannot see the changes or the blinking cursor, you can only see how it affects other things if the contents of the text input are used by the code. The other thing is that yesterday or was it a couple of days ago, it deleted a movie clip I was working on, deleted it from the library even though I bet my cursor was nowhere near the library panel. I was working on writing action script when suddenly it switched to another clip and the clip I was editing didn't exist anymore. So I had to discard changes to get it back and lost several lines of code.
