Innovative RP using game mechanics?

Postby formerly known as hf » Wed Apr 16, 2008 2:52 pm

A recent topic got me thinking.

There's a heck of a lot of great RP in Cantr, on all manner of levels.

There's a lot of 'pure' RP in Cantr. For example, people play hide and seek where the game mechanics mean they can actually see one another, but they still RP the game. Players will RP a wonderful variety of things often despite game mechanics.

But something I'm often impressed by is the ability of players to work with existing game mechanics and develop something creative and novel.

The gambling example is where I got started - people using projects and notes for gambling and lotteries, in lieu of the lack of any formalised RNG within the game.

I've also seen various characters play games using notes and other objects. I've yet to see musical instruments put to good use beyond 'X plays an ocarina' and subsequent '*[place rp here]*', but I'm sure someone's done something with that.

I know I'd be interested, and I'm sure it's help new players if people would be willing to share some of their novel uses of game mechanics and objects for roleplaying purposes.

No need to be very specific. A lot of the RP and situations are going to be specific to particular characters or places, and I don't intend for cultural specificity to be run roughshod over. But it would be useful, I hope, to share some general ideas?

In one of my charries I've RPed like background sounds on the radio and even the voice of my charrie. For example:

*you hear a shaky voice with screams in the background and metal striking metal* Help! We're under attack! Blahblah.. blabiddyblahblah!

Also, sometimes, I RP hits out. Well. Usually I do that when I try to kill somebody, and sometimes in sparring and hunting.

Yep, you should have a character in Zuzi perhaps sometimes. There is Rping there by going fishing and farming (mostly by me, I just like to do that with that character)
I often rp sparring matchs, and sometimes with real combact. And I rp hunting mostly with my expert hunters, and when I kill a lot of animals. Sort of depends on the character though.

Yeah. I noticed Zuzi. I had a guy there who died. :P He got bored, he was bored and annoyed of everything. He hated laughter and so he killed himself.

Hehe. Plus, I tried to kill Zuzi once. xD

*points to the first post* This was supposed to be about rp that benefits from mechanics of the game.

I've rp'd making useless stuff out of resources I had, like a fan out of a potato by sticking feathers into it, and later potato and carrot sculptures which I ate.

Also sometimes when I'm about to hit someone, I write two rp messages, one for a hit and one for a miss, then post the relevant one after the game decides if I got lucky. But sometimes I feel that there's no way I could miss in that situation, so I may blame the target of dodging. Also once my character was supposed to have brain surgery but the "surgeon" missed, so he blamed me of dodging, and I said it was a reflex.

I've seen your attempts to kill people personally, Seko, and they're quite good :)

ill pin everyone with really well thoughtout messages for hit/miss as seko from now on. I usually used to do that, but it got to the point that i never missed, so there really was no point. I do talk alot when i kill someone with 60% damage in one hit, as in cleaving them in half or chopping their head clean off with my battleaxe in a shower of blood.
Person: Akamada doesnt control the animals.
You see a wild boar attack Person.
Person: I still dont believe you.

<Spill> Oh, I enjoy every sperm to the fullest.

That reminds me, I remember my one of my characters first kills, he had just become a Stone Knight, and there was a guy insult us so they all attacked him up to 50%, and I did the rest with my brand new battle axe. :D
Rped that with spliting his head in half

Random animal attacks, ambiguous statements and the law of probability are good for religion RP.
