Can someone please explain skill weighting?

Postby fuschyou » Wed Jul 18, 2007 7:30 pm

I don't understand it for battle. Let's say I am an expert fighter and I have a crossbow. It has 42 attack with 80 skill weighting. What does that mean?

It means that the crossbow relies 80% on skill to wield and only 20% on strength. So if you're expert, that's great. If you're not expert and strong, it'd be better to have something else to maximize the potential.

Example:
I have a char that is a novice fighter and much stronger than average. It hits a person for 20ish with a crossbow and 43ish with a battle axe. This char is also efficient at hunting, and hits animals with both weapons at 43ish.

From what I have seen, I am not certain that the specific skill weightings affect animal hunting at all (I think it is 60% hunting skill, 40% strength). And if a weapon does not have a listed weighting (such as weapon tools), it is treated as skill weighting 60.

Here's an interesting one.

---
Char 1 has a fighting skill of novice and carries a steel battle axe. They are stronger than average.

Char 2 has a fighting skill of novice and carries a steel battle axe. They are much stronger than average.

Char 1 and Char 2 both attack the same person (the 2nd and 3rd hits on them). Char 1 causes 4% damage. Char 2 causes 42% damage.
---

Is this normal for the difference between 'stronger' and 'much stronger', or are there variables that allow lucky hits?

The first person had their damage subtracted from the shield. The second person went through unblocked.

Yes, most likely because the victim was was tired from the first attack. This is a common tactic. the first hit gets blocked completely, the second just barely gets through the shield. From the third hit, full damage is dealt.

Doug has the right idea. The first blow was probably in the high 30's for damage, however all but 4 were blocked by the defenders shield. Since they took some damage, their subsequent blocks would be less effective, but 4% is not enough to make a significant difference. The second blow was not blocked by the shield at all. The chance that a blow will bypass the shield is completely random and is not affected by skill, strength, or damage. Now that the enemy has taken 46 damage, his blocks will be roughly half of what they were before (assuming he manages to block).

That answers the question, thanks.
