the option is already there a train isn't like a boat. A boat has to come up to something so people to get off: a dock, the land or another boat. Trains on the othere had just stop at a location and you can walk a way. Now you can build a building and just call it a train station. Anyway as it is the train system will take so much iron and steel you would have to get a lot of people to get together and work on it cause by yourself or just your best bud wouldn't work well. Cause you both would be very old before you got even one line from one location to another and have a hand car.

Would the assumption be two sets of tracks and switching done autopmatically?
You see a head on train wreck in Xiria Forest.

to keep it really simple you only get the track upgrade if you have a station or platform built in the town's at each end of the road. these would just be either wooden or stone building's nothing really fancy. the first track's could just be wooden track's but don't allow trains to move fast just like a sand road ad have iron the steel track's with them needing resources including stone and sand to put under them to stabalise them.for a simple train you'd only need iron for the boiler that's unless they run on pixie dust like the car's in which case they could be made of mostly wood with some iron and steel bit's and have them like moderm commuter trains in that they have a open carriage with a motor built into it.
*edit* or have it like car's where you make the car and then build the engine inside it and hae different classes of engine*edit*

I like the engine part but I still say by making it require a trainstation or platform you complicate it all. With just adding a level to the currant system your not really making anything new your just adding to it. As is the type of vehicles that can be used in an area is limited to how far along the road to and from those areas are. I E you can pretty much ride a bike over anything but a bike cart requires that the road be upgraded. Same with a car you can travel only as far as the road permits. So, by just adding a level to the path system you would need to up grade that path to the level where you can use the train. Now starting your tracks off with iron would fit the norm as that is what they started with. And they just made them wider but at some point they couldn't make them wide enough because the weight of what they would have to carry reached there crush level. So they had to go to steel for the next step.
With adding a station into the equation you would have to set up something entirely seperate. Which means more work cause you have to figure it all out. With the way I discribed it your just adding a new level.
Anyways why are you guys insisting on a trainstation or platform?

Anyways to me it just makes better sense for the paths. You start out with a lot of sand and maybe some stone. Then more sand and a lot of stone. Then stone and oil and sand. till you have a highway. So the next level would be more like the others just with iron and then steel.

Ummm isn't this what I just said???

Needing a platform would restrict the tracks' access to those who built it. That way there would be an actual incentive for a company to make train tracks, rather than 'to improve overall efficiency for the region.' People aren't that altruistic.

same can be said for paths. I really don't think that making so otheres can't use it really matters a lick. And it would be much easier to implement with out it. But that's just my opinion.
