A copper shield? Copper alone is too maleable to be any good as a shield.
Maybe a copper-plated wooden shield would be more accurate:
Copper-plated shield:
1 day
Req:
1 Wooden shield
100g copper
hammer
Block: ~24-26
A steel shield (350g steel plus some leather, peen hammers, anvil and whatnot) would be nice. But would run the risk of making the bearer near-invincible if too strong...

Why not 35?
Steel is actually a hard material to be made into Cantr, and considering the use of 1k for the steel shield, I do consider it must be the major protection IG for much too far.

I'm no gun fanatic, and think they would be unbalancing if unproperally set up, but a gun would be a nice thing for a few people. It could add more RP possiblities such as this.
1711-1.18 I thought he was gunna shoot... *puts his gun back and wipes away the sweat*
1711-1.17 You see a man in his twenties kill a man in his eighties.
1711-1.17 *pulls out his gun and brandishes it about* Don't be insulting me youngin.
1711-1.16 *stares down the old man* Aye, that I am geezer.
1711-1.14 *looks up at the other gunslinger* You talkin' to me bo'?
I just think it would be interesting... though ammo would be a MUST for the guns... and at that it would be a massive hassle to get the resources, all though if someone was smart enough and had the resources they could set up a sort of ammo factory. It would leave room for expansion in the game, and add to the realism of Cantr. Any one else thinking Cantr's own Industrial Revolution? Same could go for Cannon's aboard ships... just WAY more requirements for the ammo. oh say... 10-20 times more. It is a cannon, not a pea shooter. All though, the cannon wouldn't be able to destroy the ship (too much programming for that) but actually leave a small but possible chance of an instantanious death to someone aboard... the more people, the higher chance. Might still be a massive amount of programming... but I'm only throwing out ideas...
Also, I know the gun idea has been thought of and talked alot about... I just thought I'd put my own idea out there, and sorry if someone already spoke of it exactly as I had. I tried reading this whole topic... but my eyes gave out 'bout page 17.

Please... no guns. I know everyone approaches this game from a different perspect (and I respect that) but introducing firearms would change the whole nature of the game. The notion of a gun seems antithetical to the creative "building" foundation of Cantr.

1: I've done the math, and once you have billows, Steel can be made slightly faster than Iron based the how much more steel you get than your original output.(calulations based on untooled gathering and hammer based hemeitite crushing). Ofcourse this varies depending on what meathod you use in each stage of production in comparison to one another and how far away each element is.
2: As a general rule of thumb for ballencing a game like this, the higher tech you go, the smaller your rewards should be for extra expenditure. Look at the Crossbow compared to the Battle Axe and Claymore. This said, a steel shield should not be a significant improvement over Iron, instead, it should be an extreamest alternative like the crossbow to prevent them from becoming too commonplace. This said, 1000k is a good wieght(so that wieght also becomes a reason not to get one), but should not give more than 2-4 extra armor. An alternitive to this philosophy is to make it a lighter shield than iron 200-250 grams, but only give in 1 extra point of armour. Since most foundries in cantr sell Steel for double iron, it will still be more expensive for most, but negligably lighter and more protective. Perhaps both could be added (towershield and steel shield)?

I believe it is the general consensus of the RD to keep weapon and shield values withing the current range to preserve the precarious balance that has managed to form (if we add more powerful shields without adding more powerful weapons, then people will complain that it is even harder to kill people; We already get enough complaints about people being too hard to kill). New ranges can be established when the the combat system is overhauled.

I have to say, I don't really understand the "no guns" rule. Crossbows aren't that far removed from primitive guns in effectiveness or utility. I would suggest that a gun be slightly more powerful than a crossbow and deteriorate at a quicker pace. It would just make alot more sense from an RP perspective for there to be guns when there's cars and radios and the like.

I like the idea of guns ... Seems like a lot of people are thinking that they will be overly powerful instant kill weapons, which I doubt. Just make them cost a lot of iron (especially the ammo), have a large chance of missing, or even jamming if they aren't regularly maintained (of course, they'll be painful on the slim chance that they hit). That should pretty much balance it out, and you won't be able to kill someone unless: the target is asleep, you have A LOT of luck (and/or possibly ammo too), or you have someone helping you.

If guns get implemented, I'll definately be asking why the hell my double-attack-a-day wasn't implemented. (ie it just assists in killing faster).
I like the current Cantr rule of thumb that one person can kill another roughly within 3 days if he/she has a good weapon, more if not.

I think a gun would be verry plausibal. Not a revolver, but a musket, yes. It would cost wood iron and tools to make, be really really expencive, and it would go hand in hand with skill dyversification for weapons (wich i think is going on). it would be easy to handle, cost a bit more, and give a little bit more damage than a crossbow, and have a 20% chance of missing.

Okay... this whole chance to miss concept is outright ludicrous... it's pretty much all skill based. If we set up guns, we'd just end up with the new crossbow. Just a another more powerful, multi-use weapon. And honestly, if it were set up in any sort of blancing way, it would be entirely too much work for ProgD for the small gains it may possibly yield in RP. With the current combat mechanism, they just aren't plausable.
