You were perhaps omitting the scutum? I'll grant it's much heavier than any other shield, but it's between the iron and tortoiseshell shields in effectiveness.

oops, the scutum... easy shield to forget, easy shield to remember not to ruin your back wielding. IMO the tortise shell shield is still better than the Scutum based on the rediculus wieght difference compaired to very close protection factors though. I'd even think twice about trading up a bonie for one of those heavy things... maybe if I were a forest guard I'd keep one... maybe...
