To put in my two cents, I'd like to see more professions that don't depend on working, period. What I mean are ones not coverved by the way the game works, like farmer, trader, manufactorer, whatever, but instead doctors or artists or writers, or anything else a player could come up with. You maybe wouldn't see this in a little town, but a big city should be able to support a few freeloaders just like in real life. And in CAntr especially, I could see paying someone just for livening up a boring town with some good RP. :)

The Ranger's Tale? Echoes of a Life Lived? The Hobbes Encyclopedia?

There's a lot of material out there, libraries and so forth, which people just don't really bother to look at. For example, there must be at least a hundred unique notes in the MacGregor Library (although some are admittedly rubbish: inventories, blanks, etc). Which reminds me, I should clean that place out sooner or later. My characters do not focus on writing, but it just happens to develop parallel with their lives...and they express it in different ways: poetry, tale, journal, etc.

I suppose what I'm asserting is yes, I'd like to see more literature as well, but that there's already a fair bit out there, yet to be discovered and explored. If you're interested in this specific category, you should keep both the Chronicles of Cantr or the Webzine in mind (link in my signature).

How did that get into just about every Island. (The Hobbes Encyclopedia).

It is on lots of islands because Hobbes has been on lots of islands. I'm sure Nitefyre can go into painstaking detail about that.

I have a character that spawned in a town with a big library so I actually have read quite a bit of Cantr literature, but like you said, it would be nice if therer was more. Also the problem with libraries is that hardly anyone ever bothers to go inside them, a writer might be better off just leaving all their best stuff out in the open.

Well yeah, but that's not quite what I meant. John Locke's actual profession is being a RAnger, and Hobbes is an explorer I guess. What I was thinkign was more along the lines of a character who only wrote, and actually got paid for it. Like playwriters used to do a long time ago. Or in Cantr since not many people seem to care about poetry or fiction or whatever it could be the leader of the town paying a writer to make a town history, like maybe one that cuts out all the bad stuff in order to make them look good.

Yeah that would be fun to read. It would have no historical value whatsoever but it would be fun.

Hey, history is written by the victors. And the Egyptians did the same thing and it seemed to work out pretty well for them. And it would have historical value in the fact that once that leader was gone, the next one could either keep the lie going or use it as evidence of what scum they were.

But in cantr I guess it'd be hard to do since so many people would ahve actually witnessed the stuff and copy and pasted it or just remember what really happened, there aren't any mists of time for the truth to get lost in yet. :)

Yea, the only thing I would think that would get lost is things that happend around day 0-150.

A lot has gotten lost already...Sure, most places have someone in the vicinity who has lived through much of cantr's history, but most interesting events don't have that many witnesses. Then when none of them write it down, the incident is nothing but rumors once they die. I have a character who was devoted to saving history...he's a little lost at the moment.

I made one of my chars do that once, he ended up dying from starvation. History keeping isn't one of the wealthier jobs. Rich towns should pay people to keep history for them, it may be a bit one sided but who cares, that's what makes it interesting.

Clan MacGregor requires historical reading of important notes to the Clan/MidNorth's history before joining it. I know this puts a lot of (the uninterested) people off, but still, it keeps the history alive. It's also a right of passage into Clanhood.

I'm very fond of those people willing to take up the challenge of learning their history, with basically all four of my characters

Well, both are retired :) making them solely performers based on material/experiences (both old and new). Only known to one living Librarian in the world, Hobbes has also produced fiction based on nothing he has experienced, including one very surrealistic piece which should pop into the zine in several months.
