I suppose an appropriate question to ask is "When will the vehicles to parts change take place?".

If it's going to be soon, then there's not going to be enough time for lots of people to make the unbalanced vehicles.

If it's going to be a while, all that info will be on the wiki soon anyway. I've recently added the exact carry on weight for the bike cart and will soon be adding the weights for the tandem bike and dirt motorcycle.

I'm not too passionate about it myself, but the decision to withhold the information doesn't make too much sense to me.

General undirected rant

Postby Sho » Sun Sep 25, 2005 3:58 am

The wiki needs a sysop or two (Wikipedia equivalent of a moderator - can delete pages and block/ban users or IPs). Right now Jos is the only one, and he's busy with other things. There are pages that need deleting, spammers that need blocking and stuff that needs overseeing. A good, old-fashioned wiki mob (mostly me and Nick) has been cleaning stuff up, but we need some sort of power structure to really make things work. Nick, me, Chris Johnson - whoever. We just need someone active with a good knowledge of MediaWiki editing who can do stuff that requires special permissions.

Also, the wiki is badly in need of a proper language split. Right now English, Polish, Dutch and Portuguese pages are all in the same system. It's making it much harder to figure out what needs doing in the English pages, because articles from other languages get in the way of searches. Also, where two languages have the same word for something, editors have to name the pages with suffixes.

One would have to create three new wikis, then set up language links between them. There's a page that explains how to do that:
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Help:Guide_for_system_administrators_for_setting_up_interwiki_linking

The watchlist is broken for some reason. Not fun.

Whoever changed the menu on the vehicles, please change it back. It was much more user friendly the previous way.

The fun of a Wiki is that you can do that yourself ;) ...

About separate Wikis: it's quite a hassle to set up 11 Wikis :? I'll think about it. But I think users can find solutions too, without resorting to that, no? I thought the idea of mixing them was not so bad, actually.

About moderators: I still find it difficult to see why. Any change can be rolled back by anyone, why do we need to assign people to that task? But if we do, it'd be a CD task. I'll talk to them about it.

It's not a rollback issue. The problem is that nobody can delete pages without sysop powers, and that means that it can often be a real pain to move or merge pages.

Mixing the languages is a huge mess. I daresay the readers can figure it out in most cases (except for cases, like Alumina (NL), where readers might have trouble locating the page they're looking for); this is more for the convenience of the editors. Here's an example: I want to figure out which pages are needed (linked to but not existent). There's a Special page that returns a list of such pages. All well, good and quite easily done. Unfortunately the page is clogged with a few hundred Dutch and Polish pages, because those wikis are still at the stage of translating and transferring content from the English wiki. It's a chore looking for the English pages I need, often the Dutch and Polish pages link to English pages, making it hard to figure out what's actually needed, and, well . . . better cut off this rant before I bore everyone to death. I would guess that the Dutch and Polish editors have a much worse time of it all, what with English editors completely clogging the Recent Changes page. Anyway, it would be fairly straightforward to move the non-English pages to their own language wikis (I think I could do it myself, given a big homework assignment that I can procrastinate on), but the wikis and interlanguage links have to be set up first.

If anyone has issues with large-scale organization on the wiki, please make signed comment on the main Current Events page or the Talk page for the organization page in question.

If the CD is to take care of being the sysops of the Wiki, they should keep up to date with the important talk pages, and the manual of style, etc. There's only a few of us talking on them.

I'm repurposing this as the wiki request thread, for me to bemoan the absence of important information (defined as useful information, the absence of which creates a hole in one of the organized sections, such as Vehicles and Machinery), and for others to make me work in the wiki.

Anyone can request information, and that information will go on the wiki as soon as I can get it. Anyone not comfortable with editing the wiki can post information here, requested or not, and I will post it, nicely formatted, within a day or so.

My requests:

Primitive oven - how to build, how to use, etc.

Car radios and all associated newstuff (semi-finished products) - the same.

Primitive oven needs mud that needs water? Water doesn't exist anymore. Of course I have seen some stashes of mud that would be enough...

Object: Primitive oven
Days needed: 1
Raw materials needed: 1800 grams of mud

If anyone has built a primitive oven, I need to know what projects it has.
Also, I need all cooking projects that use dung, on any machine.

Mud can be gathered in some places, or could be the last time I checked, a few months ago. This knowledge, and the gathering rate, are already in the wiki.

Also, shiny points to creepyguyinblack for putting the radio information on the wiki.

Added, probably with incorrect format too. Enjoy.

Digging for magnetite
Note that in one day one person can only dig 750 gram. The number of turns will be rounded upwards. The end result will have a random deviation (max 20%) of the amount you ask for.

No tools will enhance gathering.

Found on the same island with taconite.

Is the iron carving knife more or less powerful a weapon than the iron chisel? People have told me both things.

Also, can someone post all the lists in the manufacturing menu (Weapons, Tools, Machinery and so on), exactly as they appear in Cantr? The addition of bronze has changed a lot of names, and other things are not quite clear.

Um... there's no information on pineapples, it doesn't even mention them.

There's a page for them now, with everything I know about them, which isn't much. Someone fix that.

Aloe Vera

If you have pair of scissors, you can collect 200 grams a day.
