If we could shear sheep, then a valuable industry could grow without driving the animals to extinction. I know bears and such wouldn't sit politely, but surely some of the more docile species could be worked with.

All this leads to being able to domesticate animals entirely or at least to some extent with some or all animal types. Personnaly I would rather see each succeding generation of a domesticated animal more domesticated than the last, makes it a long term goal to strive for with a reward naturally.
So if you could domesticate animals it would mean getting certain resources from them without killing whatever animal it is but you may want to breed cows simply to slaughter them for their hide and flesh. I saw in another topic about animals that perhaps building a pen and then leading animals in would enable you to harvest goods from them...or was it breeding them? Either way some sort of structure to facilitate it would be needed.

without sheep that's quite interesting.
Unless, of course, the resource goes away if there's no sheep.
An interesting thought: 'cotton' in German is Baumwolle--or 'tree wool'.
maybe cantr has wool trees?

It would be interesting if there were options for certain animals that they made a new resource available when they were in the location (i.e. sheep would make wool available) but if they leave it goes away.
Another by-product could be manure from cows & sheep -- possibly it could be used to fashion a "tool" like a fertilizer spreader that would increase people's productivity in picking vegetables?

"some suggestion in the past to make gathering food more difficult"
That would make sense - it would be good to still have some food that is typically found growing wildly (say berries, tree-fruits etc.) but just have them in a limited supply.
But then allow characters to "build" crop fields which at first would just provide a limited, but relatively protected source of crop and then allow them to build "upgrades" (i.e. a dung fork, fertilizer spreader, irrigation system, combine/harvester) that wuld allow them to, over time increase the production of their farm.
In far future versions perhaps some farming logic could even be incorpoated to allow the seasons (or even one day, weather) affect the amount of crop - additionally fields could gradually become less effective if the same crop was grown year after year (in the same way farmers need to rotate crops to keep the soil healthy).

Yeah please. My farmer has a farm full of rice, and no one wants to buy it, even when the get less in a day when they farm it themselves. He went to collect wood and coal cuz he thinks th4e market for food is a waste of time really. He's been botherring some poor guy in the forest where he is now with stories of how good teh quality of his rice is because he talks to it while it grows.
Let there be hunger and he shall feed ya (and get rich).

as i posted a bit on the clothing suggestion area... so i post here...
"domestication of cantr animals" just a thought:
1~ harvest wood, build paddocks/pastures/fences/barns.
2~ create rope, with hemp, or cotton, so you can catch the animal
3~ catch sheep, goats, horses, cows and put in one of those structures.
4~ tame horse, sheer sheep, milk cow, butcher cow.
5~ fenced or captured animals reproduce in the structure if you have more then one of that type in there.
i like this idea. we could have real farmers and cattle ranchers!
>> to sheer a sheep a person should probly have scissors or clippers.
>>to milk a cow maybe a milk bucket? and a barrel to store it in before trading it out.
>> to tame a horse they should have a halter, rope, saddle, and about 15 days of "project time" once the animal is captured. a horse could be a mode of transportation other then a car, and much better for the timeline too. get rid of cars, give people with cars a horse, and wagon instead?
