How long is a repair project 'hour'?

Postby formerly known as hf » Sun Jul 17, 2005 8:01 pm

I've searched - but couldn't see that this has come up - I've started a whole load of repair projects, for certain hour lengths - but they're taking ages to complete - a 12 hour project certainly doesn't complete in 12 Cantr hours - and it's not even over in 12 RL hours - it' taken a day or so now...

Is this just me? Should I look at my watch more often, or are other players seeing the same thing?

A Cantr day is eight hours, equal to 24 rl hours. A project requiring 12 hrs is going to take a day and half total.

I believe mine are finishing up in the number of Cantr hours I set the project for. Maybe it's just a glitch with you? Is it a tiredness or damage factor?

I haven't done so many repairs but I've never run into a situation where it would be "oh damn, it's so boring in here, I wish this repair would end so that I could go find something interesting". No, my characters repair things while waiting for something or someone, or then on the side of other things. Nothing to complain about. If you keep a reasonable amount of tools then you can maintain them all. If you got more than that, then you're an evil capitalist and you should share them with others!! Or hire someone else to repair them, you rich bastard...

Plus, some people will be better than others at repairing. I have a charrie who does it in about 1/3 less time than the number given when you attempt to repair something. Unfortunately, another for whom it seems to take about double the time.

I think you're wrong there. The skills that exist were explained on the wiki and that was not included.

Could this be explained by tiredness (Nick is right about skills...)

Well I don't know, but one of my people really is very good at repairing. She worked on something that was supposed to be for 12 hours I think in 8 she had done it.

I have another guy who is HORRIBLE at it always!! I think he is at 10% tiredness though.

I just assumed it was a skill...hm

Yeah, tiredness and skil come into it.

I've frequently started very short repair projects, even as short as one hour, because my character might have to dash off, and I don't want somebody taking over the repair project and stealing the item. Or because the item might be needed pretty soon. The problem with that is that , due to tirednes, lack of skill, or whatever, it nearly alweays transpires that the project is something like 98% complete after the specified time, and then I''m forced to spend an additional hour. (and get very poor value for the time invested)

If we're asked how much time we want to spend on a project, then that's how long the project should take, but what actually happens is that you do whatever quantity of work a person with average skill would do, and you keep on working 'til you've reached that target, nevermind how inconvenient that is.

I have a character who is good at repairing tools, but not good at repairing her sabre. Maybe all repairing skills aren't equal.

(EDIT: skillful repair of tools and novice repair of sabre)

I thought it was changed to 7 hours... I haven't seen an 8th hr since I've been back on any of my charrie pages... :?

And another thing...

Hey, supposing you're attacked anbd badly injured whilst repairing some item (your shield, most likely). Then your work-rate would slow down and you might never get your shield back

I predict that this is going to happen to one of Surly's character's any time now, except it won't be his useless iron shield he gets stuck in the middle of repairing, but the knife he needs to gather healing foods with

(Why? Cos that's just how Surly's luck runs. I wouln't wish it on him, but I can't finding the idea amusing. I have a cruel sense of humour, evidently)
