Settle Gliese

Postby haggismcbean » Thu Sep 09, 2021 2:25 pm

Hi guys. I've been working on a game as a lockdown project and although there's still a lot to do I think I'm finally at a stage where it's playable.

The game is broadly inspired by Cantr, but with more of a focus on building larger-scale economies and societies
- You embark into the world in a team so you have a 'family' of sorts to begin with
- The world is much harsher - it's very easy to kill people and to die, and characters will die of old age. You will need to protect yourselves from outsiders in order to survive.
- I've tried to create the conditions for a more realistic economy. There is genuine scarcity of resources, and the possibility of famine, to try to force the characters to work together. I think it’ll take a bit of tweaking to get the balance right with this.
- A top down 2D world so the players can make pretty houses, wear cool clothes, and make interesting strategic choices - for example, where to found towns, or whether to build defensive walls.

Please keep in mind it's still early days so although it is a persistent world things could change/be lost at any time, I'm only really looking for people to join who would be okay with this for the time being and maybe even help out with community moderation, balance suggestions, bug reports, tech tree, art, and so on. There's also no guide and not much in-game help at the moment so you'll have to be happy to puzzle things out for yourself (or ask me questions) for the time being. I'm still actively working on the game so I'll make a further announcement when things are a bit more solid.

If this is something that sounds interesting to you, please go to https://settle-gliese.com and try it out.

There's also a newly created discord here https://discord.gg/h9sCtUfhhW
And a currently empty wiki here https://settle-gliese.fandom.com

The current development roadmap is roughly as follows, although this is subject to change as the players see fit:
- Old age
- Barricadable doors
- A skill system to necessitate trading/specialisation
- Rot (this is implemented at the moment but only for certain items)
- Tree/animal stock replenishment (currently trees/animals never regrow)
- Tech tree finalisation balance tweaks (I want there to be no useless items, and differing versions of the same item depending on your ability to create bronze)
- Bridges
- Boats
- Dragging and multi-character jobs
- Horses, beasts of burden, and other farm animals
- An intelligent money system
- Richer differences between biomes, more plants, weather
- Child birth

Let me know if you have any questions or feedback!

Sounds cool, but I couldn't create an account on the main page?

Sorry to hear that, would you mind telling me what browser you are using? I managed to get around 70 sign ups so far and just checked it, worked fine for me.

If you visit the discord I can provide live tech support for you :)

hmm, it seems I can't edit my first post but here is an updated link to the (still not very good) wiki https://settle-gliese-game.fandom.com/w ... _Game_Wiki

I'm using Chrome... the button appears to be not really a button, but a text field. The cursor changes to a vertical line like it does over a text field, though I can't actually type in it).

Is resting implemented yet? I found a bed but I can't seem to use it. Does it rest in time if I just stay on it? Clicking on the text doesn't refresh energy and I tried writing /rest but it said something went wrong.

Thanks for trying it out!

Resting has a basic implementation but definitely needs work. If I remember correctly you have to stand on the bed and click on 'rest' in the location tab - the text should then change to say 'stop resting'. Then you wait. The energy is restored every hour at 15 minutes past.

When I tried to hunt, it said something went wrong and the map refreshed and there was a lot of reddish brown squares. I'm not sure what that means. But I'm certainly glad that you're trying this and have gotten this far. Happy to see that there are so many types of wood.

Oooh I haven't seen that one myself. The brown squares are ploughed fields so not quite sure how that happened. If you can get the same behaviour again posting a screenshot of your developer console in the #bugs channel in discord would help out a lot.

Thanks for the encouraging words. There's definitely a lot left to do but it's exciting to see that some people can see the potential.

Trying to craft a clay pot gives the following error

Code: Select all

tile.actions.js:74 error Error: Error: Cannot perform action CLEAR_PLOT on tile type CLAY_POT
    at q (index.js:249)
    at batch-client.js:41
    at Array.forEach (<anonymous>)
    at e.<anonymous> (batch-client.js:35)
    at f (runtime.js:63)
    at Generator._invoke (runtime.js:293)
    at Generator.next (runtime.js:118)
    at e (asyncToGenerator.js:3)
    at d (asyncToGenerator.js:25)

I think today I actually may have successfully hunted even though it messed up the map and a lot of ghost piles appeared. When I went on top of one, it didn't show up in the items list. Also some of the growing grains were replaced by piles I think, but they came back after I logged out and back in.

It's a bit of a memory game remembering which things are in which square.

Thanks for reporting these. I've released some updates which hopefully fix both of these bugs and give us a performance improvement. Things will be slow to load on refresh but then once you've loaded the game moving around and in between menus should be a lot faster.

Thanks I'm glad you like it :) I've got big plans for this little game - hopefully I will have an exciting announcement to make in the coming weeks
