Question about upcoming situation

I have a character that runs a tool company.
Another character was travelling with his companion. The companion wanted iron, and was directed to the town that my tool character was in, and directed to my tool characterh. She made a deal with the tool company character to get some resources in exchange for iron. My travelling character has followed his companion and helped her gather the resources. This situation was delicate before, and now seems to be getting "worse"
The companion has fallen way behind (and is maybe dead) on the return. My character continued so as not to starve. He is almost back to the town that they came from. Now....
Should he deliver the half of the resources he carries and get half the iron from the tool character? It seems logical but it also seems weird....
He does not know if his companion still lives or not. If she is still living and following him then fulfilling the delivery would seem best. If not, then he should probably go to the town and sell the resources for the best price and do what he wants. As it is now, I don't know what to do.
From the tool character....he has no idea if either still live. Everything is tempting, because the tool character desperately needs this resource, of course.
I need to be sure that I don't rationalize the actions of one simply out of my desires for the other....although they seem somewhat logical to me. If the companion was with the traveller....it would be so much easier, it was her desires that got me to this point.
I need strong and decisive opinions....no wishy washy stuff. Tell me what you think, and tell it directly.
