Sjoftich: the Communist thread

There's a guy calling himself Alfred ludivigi engels who dropped some notes with demands and propositions that sound suspiciously like the ones the real-life Engels' would make.

There's also an older note about a package service called "United Parcel Server"(= UPS).

I met the UPS character in Sjoftich Hills South. I think the player is well meaning but just a little unimaginative with his branding.

Thanks :) . We're looking into it.

For the UPS issue, I'm going to let it slide.
The reason is that there is already a building with the name, and also the message about the company seems already wide-spread and ingrained in that region. So, changing it now would likely cause more damage/confusion than just letting it be.
However, the player will be informed that all future ventures of his/her chars should have original names.

Bleh. But we want to keep all real life things out of the game.

Speaking of which, Hogwarts... in Olipifirovash West. Rename it to like "Cool Wizzo's School of Magik" or something, GOD, I don't want Harry Potter in Cantr! NEVER! *Hisses*

For the UPS thing, though, I would let that slide too. "United Postal Service" is just that... three words. It's not an actual "name". Like, if it were "Canada Post" THEN I would have a problem with it. "Canada Post" is more of a 'name', because when you hear it, it doesn't actually say what it is, but you KNOW what it is.

...A better example. "McDonald's." - If you've never heard of the name, you'd think "What's McDonald's?" - but if you have, and you know it's a fast-food restaurant, then it would be more of a name. But if it were named "Burger Joint." - You know what it is already, and anything could be named that, it's generic. Just like "United Postal Service". It's generic. You could have a Postal Service everywhere. United just means... it's all together, or something. So, to me, it's three words rather than a "name".

I bet no one understands what I mean. Oh boy.

But my comment about Hogwarts stands. Hogwarts must be destroyed. I have an EXTREME personal hatred for both Harry Potter and anything that is in MY CANTR that comes from real life.

Fidel Castro.
Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
Austin Powers.

Just to name three.

Sure, they may or may not represent their real life counterpart, but the fact that it's unoriginal and comes from real life makes me angry. Austin Powers, I would let slide. Yet again, the thing with the 'name'. Austin, anyone could be named that. Powers, that's not a common last name, but it's there. So, Austin Powers is possible. Plus, the characters doesn't really go around screaming of mojo, does he? I never noticed.

Fidel Castro, GAH, smoking cigars (Which don't exist), being all capitalist and communist (just like real life), grrrrr, peeves me, but nothing's been done yet, so I doubt anything ever will.

Hogwarts. Oh man, this shouldn't have found its way in the game. Really. The character Albus Dumbledore built Hogwarts and advertised it as Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. COINCIDENCE? I think not. In my opinion, that's a super-ass CRB.

But of course, none of this belongs in this topic.

I just wanted to vent.

*Farts*

There we go.

There is also the "Vegeta`s Alchemic Guide" which tells you how to make 'Skooma' from 'moon sugar'.

Dragonball Z and Morrowind. What a lovely combination.

*shakes head* I see nothing wrong with OOC names and services. We have prison, jails, bars, librarys, Cupid, mail services, etc...

What's the problem? :?

We have to realize when Cantr is advertised the main thing that catches peoples eye IMO (because it caught mine and everyone I told about the game) is that you can be ANYTHING you want to be. SO someone living out their fantasy playing a crook, Austin Powers, or Cupid is no biggy to me. Who am I to tell them who they can and can not be. I have a character name Fidel (after my son) and he delivers mail and love it. I would be more than upset if someone told me I couldn't do that anymore. I'd also scream FALSE ADVERTISEMENT! :P

again, we're forced to use an ooc language because the game wouldn't work otherwise. out side of that, ic culture should be developed ic. listen to anthony. he makes the important distinction between what is acceptable because it's part of english (which we've taken from ooc out of necessity), and what's not because it's ooc culture.

if you want no restrictions what so ever, then you've just thrown out the capital rule. cantr with out the capital rule would be a mess.

Cantr without the CR would be like some of the mock-fights that happen in certain IRC channels. Except without being fun.

Sparkle, we don't have Cupid. We cannot be Fidel Castro. You can be ANHYTHING you want to be. But not anyone who exists IRL. That's just a lack of any imagination.

Revanael, who are you to penalize someone with lack of imagination. I to was not imaginative when coming up with my chars. names. I used my children's names and any other fictional character name I could think of. I even had chars. IC name one of my chars. for me. :P

If I could go back and change things, i'd take the elvish references out of the Nossé note. In my defense, that was almost two RL years ago, and I was a lot newer to cantr.

Every name I've used I created myself. Three of them I'd made up for use elsewhere and then used here, but they still came from my mind.

I think it is really simple actually. Names from OOC are OK as long as the person, place, or thing they're associated with doesn't influence what you do IC.

However, my personal opinion is that names should be somewhat creative. Even obscure OOC charecter names are nice. It's even kind of interesting when people pull an in game irony. Like if someone named "Mother Teresa" was a iron fisted tyrant who raped and pillaged.

Oh, speaking of which: Can there be rape in Cantr?

Is it really a CRB to call a building 'Hogwarts'? I suppose it could be construed as tempting people to look round for Harry, Hermoine and Ron but, taken out of the real life context, it's just another name, no better or worse than, say, 'Pigzits'.

It does seem a bit out of place when I look at it from a RL perspective but so does the idea of cars when most of the people my characters encounter are still sub-stone age in technology! From a character's point of view, it's just another name.
