Believe me, in-game history is important to me. But if people want to destroy landmarks, I see no reason to have a problem with that. History really survives in Cantr through stories and notes, not landmarks.

-stuffs all the uneditable historical notes into a sealed envelope, which is then stuffed into another sealed envelope, and stuffed into yet another sealed envelope, and sticks the envelope in a locked filing cabinet locked away in the deepest room of any building in Cantr-

I hereby declare this new law: Nobody is to talk about ANYTHING that has happened before ten days ago. That means if today is day 3213, then you cannot talk about anything that happened before day 3203. Tomorrow, you won't be allowed to talk about anything that happened before day 3204. Any and all whispering will be assumed as breaking this law, and all offenders will be mauled and dragged into a single-person cell in the prison.

......Okay, so that's probably a little extreme, but history does get destroyed even in notes.

Which doesn't have anything to do with Surly's point. Her point is that most history is preserved in forms other than landmarks, not that those other forms can't be destroyed. In fact, that's almost another argument defending monument destruction, pointing out that the ways in which history is currently carried forward is already destructible.

Although, it's not a great analogy anyway. While that could certainly happen in theory, it's perfectly reversible. The current leadership is killed or driven out and the new leadership digs those notes out and returns them. A similar process cannot be applied to destroyed monuments.

I'm beginning to suspect that I'm taking your post more seriously than you intended. :D

I truly do like the historical value of landmarks. Then again, there are definitely some that my chars would spend a great deal of effort to remove but don't fall under the sabotage/rude category that PD would handle.

To discourage random/easy destruction of landmarks, I'd like to propose an obscene length to the project in addition to the suggested need for a crowbar and sledgehammer. Seriously, I have a char who would gladly spend 200 days tearing down one particular landmark. Even 100 days would probably make someone think hard about how badly they want the thing gone.

That might work. It would work better if monument destruction projects could be canceled if not actively worked on, just like lock destruction projects.

I agree with both Doug and SumBum, I think it should take a looooong time to destroy a landmark. There are some I would like to see destroyed, but others that would be so wrong to see destroyed.

Like grave stones... writing fades even if the stone still stands it can be hard to read. Maybe the writing can have a deterioration rate (slow of course) Which can either be left to fade out completely,(then they can be renamed) .. or repaired, so they are once again clear to read.

I think being able to cancel the task should be allowed either way.

I'm for deterioration also. Very slow for stone monuments, maybe on the order of 150 years or longer.

150 years is too fast for stone monuments, think about stone buildings in real life. Also, it would be possible to conserve them right? There is also another kind of monuments that are not in stone but are very significant: Mummies.

150 years is not too long imo, ESPECIALLY if they can be repaired. Consider that the game has only been running for 170 years.

Considering that the majority of characters doesn't see the age of fifty, 150 years seems rather long and it definitely shouldn't be more. This is one of the cases where comparisons with real life don't work.

*bump*

Can we please have manual destruction of landmarks? 100 day project that requires a sledgehammer and crowbar?
