floating on a sea message

A lot of times my chars wind up sitting still in the water for a long time because I don't realize the boat is stopped. I think you should get a message about that, just like when you stop because you bumped into coast.
I also thought it would be nice if when you were sailing you had two seperate project percentages on the character list, just like when you're travelling in a vehicle on land an working on a project at the same time. But the first suggestion is probably easier to do.

Boats stop moving when
1) They dock to land or another boat
2) They hit land
3) There are no crew on deck when sailing is processed
I suggest if you leave the deck of a moving boat to enter a docked boat , you should check movement when you return. All other cases are dealt with as events
Also with boat movement there is no pre-detemined end point such as found in road movements or normal projects, consequently there is no progress completion which can be calculated .

This makes no sense....
A project is how far the boat is to travel, you set the length by the number of turns, just like you set the length of a drying meat project by how much meat you use...
The boat does not continue in the same direction your speed changes from 100% to 0%...
If there is some kind of drift occurs then charracters have no way of calculating and all my effort in keeping a navigation record becomes worthless..
The boat stops moving it should be an event.....
And I still can't see any reason why % of the length of journey you have chosen cannot be shown.... but then I am not a programmer

You can set the number of turns to 0 - ∞
If you are unlucky enough to be on a heading which will never hit land, then the percentage would be a % of ∞
...

The majority of boats moving in the game are on a turn setting of zero - i.e. no pre-determined end

Okay wait, I'm all confused now.

If you set your boat to sail north for 8 turns, when you check you get the mesage "You are sailing on a sea in direction 0." (or something like that, I can't check right this second)
When those 8 turns are up you just get "You are floating on a sea." And as far as I know 'floating' means the same as 'stopped'. Or at least it's moving slow enough that it doesn't seem to actually be moving any.

My fault Marian - I had forgotten about the non-zero turn control for movement when I wrote the list. It does, as you point out , generate an event when the ship stops.

So if you set 0 fair enough no percentage, but even when exploring, I would always set a limit, max 20 turns (if I know I have a busy weekend) it just seems piss poor that you would set a boat going in a direction and then never have to check your course...
Guess different people play different ways, but my exploring character is overly concerned with finding their way back so thus far he has made meticulous records of all the journey...

I think it's fair to assume that most sailors are in fact NOT boldly going where no cantrian has gone before, but sailing known waters. And then they just point the ship in the right direction and go ZZZZZzzzzzznx.
At least, that's how my trader does it. And since all course changes and seen dockable places show up as events (lighthouses don't, but for those who trade that's a good thing), it might work for an explorer too.
/Hellzon - little experience of sailing

As I said before most sailors don't use the turn component - or they deliberately set it to zero . Only 15% of active boats (i.e. moving and not docking) have a turn setting

Wow - I'm one of 15 %. I feel so special. I'm one of the sailors who has no idea where he's going, so I sail a bit at a time, think on it a while, then sail some more.

Well I guess I'm one of the 15% percent to, I always try to stay close to the coast so I adjust the ship several times for most trips.

I have one character on a boat that was at a 0 turn setting, but now that I'm navigating around the land I found, I use turn settings to make sure I'm not too far off course.
I am, in fact, one of the rare few sailing into the un known. Still trying to sail around the world, but have to stop when I run out of names for locatoins. "more land" "yet more land" "another beach" gets old, so you dock and kill and ostrich and rename it "Big Bird", or pick some Coffee Cherries and found the "Coffee Cherry Kingdom"
But for the rare times I am intentionally sailing in a direction forever, I always set the turn setting. I would Love an idiot message letting me know I've been floating and for how long.

Agreed. I actually didn't know setting "0" did infinite turns. I always use the turn counter. A message upon reaching stop would be very beneficial.

Good to see some true fellow sailors
Besides of the other 85%, how many are being piloted by corpses!
