In fact, the latest sails can actually propel a boat faster than the wind! Please do work that out, Cause i sure as hell can't....

A Mainsail that is the most important on a ship (one can sail with only a Jib or Genoa, or even a spinnacre but this isn't reccomended) Should be implemented. Just one type of ship, Sloop, sloop with added Genoa sail. (we can take it as read that ships already have a sail, unless there are gangs of poor Cantrian newspawns chained to a series of oars)

How a boat can go faster than the wind? It's all about sail angle. Sailing downwind (in the direction the wind is going) you can get to almost the speed of the wind, and that's it. A close reach (which means sailing into the wind as much as possible, at an angle slightly off of it) is the fastest point of sail for a boat. It's hard to describe without illustrations, so I won't try to right now.

I think the part people don't understand is that a modern sail boat is not propelled by the wind pushing the sail.

A modern sail is similar to an airplane wing and creates "lift". Because of lift you can sail into the wind at about 45 degree angle of the direct wind.

So, if the wind is blowing east at 10 knots and you are sailing west at 8 knots (directly west) you are essentially sailing "faster" than the wind.

Please pie. Don't keep bumping your suggestion threads like this. It's annoying, and it won't get them any more attention from anyone (forum user or ProgD).

Let sleeping threads lie

For even imagioning this idea you are stupid.

I think this is a good idea and should be implemented.

I like the idea of having several basic hulls that you can customise for speed, manevourability (faster docking and other things), holds, or other things.

You could have small, medium, and large boats (dinghy could represent small boats like rowing boats and, uh, dinghies, and would be a different thing altogether).

You can then add masts, cabins, and other things.

A boat without sails would have to be rown. Perhaps each hull comes with a number of rwoing seats, which when you work on create the boats speed. More rowing means faster speed. You add more if you wanted using the option slots, and you'd need an oar (but it would be a lot cheaper than making sails and rigging).

Also, sails needn't be made only of cotton canvas. People across the world used their local materials to create sailcloth, so I don't see why it can't be the same in Cantr.

*crosshair smells a galley slaver*

I like that idea, and so when one is sailing the boat, one cannot work on a project?
