If you look at the information of an abandoned gathering project you can see the percentage that has completed but not how big the project is. The only way you can tell is to participate in the project and see how much more you complete in an hour then work it out. It seems reasonable that if you can see the percentage completed you would know the amount being gathered.

This is a suggestion which has long been in Flyspray and is currently being tested - I'll move this to accepted suggestions

It is very good change. I have forgoten many times how big projects I has started.
