All it says is "1578-3.08: You play some music on a brand new Flute (bone)"

can't you make it a little bit more intresting? there are lots of suggestions above about "1578-3.08: You expertly play some music on a Flute (bone)"
or "1578-3.08: You produce beautiful music using a Flute (bone)" or "1578-3.08: You expertly play ***** on a Flute (bone)"...

No - The event generated has deliberatly been kept neutral. Musical instruments are for RP - the reaction of the audience shouldn't be predefined in the ways you suggest .

Could you not have a kind of thing like hunting power, except with Sad, slow, fast, lively, etc...

That should be RP'd - Implementing a system like that would be more restrictive than the current implementation.

Well.... you could have the option to not put any discriptive stuff in at all?

Yes leave it as is. My char has to practice to improve the dreadful sound he made on his first tune, and he can't improve if the game tells him his skill. As you say, it's purely for RP so actual skill matters not. And remember that God-given ability of novice performers not to hear what they actually play, but what they think they're playing... What's that got to do with the price of papayas? Ignore last bit.

Piano! Obviously you cant hold it, but you use it like a firepit, or a drill. Its stuck in that location, but you can play on it when ever you feel like it

Currently musical instruments can't be fixed to the ground. Also, please leave any instrument suggestions in the stickied thread in the suggestion area.

Alright, woah, I have an idea. How about when you make an instrument, and you play it, instead of the generic thing, you can fill in the blank!

Example:

You play ___________________ on a flute (bone).

You put whatever you want to in there, but obviously if you put something stupid then it's a sort of a CRB or whatever. But it's basically the same as you can't emote that you're flying, etc.

Any takers?

No. If you want to play an instrument, then actually play it. Please leave -some- roleplay left in it.

Yes! This is the roleplay! You decide how you play it in this. It looks stupid to me to see: You hear JoSchmo play some music on a flute. And I haven't even seen anyone rp anything after that actually, but it's weird to have a more elaborate thing after that. I suppose it's similar with the fighting.

Regardless, either discontinue the "you hear blah play some music" and just allow for rp with it, or implement my suggestion.

If we discontinue the funtionality, theres no point in having instruments and therefore they should be removed from the game. I like your idea, and i do try to RP as much as i can within the constraints, also seeing as the bug caused people not to be able to see the action when it was played helped i think...

If you implement this, then everyone can play a song the exact same way with the same skill as everyone else. How boring is that?

Instruments are new. Let's give some time to figure out a real way to RP using them to play songs that relects the creativity of the player instead of genericizing it before the code even cools off. I don't want everyone to be able to play them. In fact, I want most people to completely suck at it, just like in real life. Give creative players the opportunity to use their noggins and make interesting bard/minstrel characters.

I can't quite follow this surely the instruments should fall into one one of two categories:

a) A RPing item, rather like clothes are (currently) no function, events or commands associated with them but you can see someone is carrying it and then you RP to your heatrs contents EG:
You say: *plays 'Smoke on the Water' on his accoustic guitar hesitantly but with a very mellow look on his face singing along tunelessly*

OR:

b) An item with skills and an event attached to it - in which case the event should, as suggested, have some kind of description a player can attach to give it some meaning.

The current implementation seems pointless - skillfully or novicely has no value when there is no cariable product output but does then limit the ability to RP - after all it does nothing that couldn't be done in an emote...

I'm not talking about character skills. I'm talking about the players creativity skills.
