I'm sure the towns with little or no access to wood and fuel would appreciate it if, upon normal purging, a pile of fresh dung were produced....

The amount, of course, would be determined by how much you ate since the last purge, and you'd get more from fruits and vegetables and then grains than from meat.

I think it's all fine as long as:
1) People know what the consequence is of putting food in... they lose it for good.
2) People know how much healing food they need to heal and not waste any.

Please, please, please. Actually, this should really have its own topic! It's brilliant!
Side note: dung should be produced by animals too, could be a daily tick. Absolutely nonsensical that the only way to get dung is to kill an animal. Milk and wool and such things, yes, I guess those too but it would take a lot more work to implement those things. Would probably be done in the form of projects that require specific types of animals to be present? Could that be coded?
Okay, derailed the thread enough, sorry.

Ok, we need to wrap this up so we can implement it and move on to other things. I believe this is what is agreed upon:
-Eaten food that reduces the hunger or damage bars is converted to digested food and purged at the eating tick
-Eaten food that affects intoxication will have intoxication applied immediately. Healing/Nourishing effects are handled as described.
-Digested food is purged automatically at the eating tick
-Nourishing food is still automatically eaten if necessary
-At the eating tick, undigested healing food will be applied if wounded and then purged
-At the eating tick, undigested nourishing food will be applied if hungry and then purged.
-Stomach capacity is 8000g
-Characters can manually purge their stomachs
Points of contention that need to be resolved:
-Since healing food will no longer be lost (if unused, it will sit in the stomach), do we need to list any information at all about the healing potential of these foods? If we do, then we've clearly decided that the amount to heal/nourish to 100% health should be listed.
-Self purging: Do we want a visible event? Do we want a byproduct? Do we want consequences beyond the loss of the food?

You could cause purging food to cause the character to feel faint for a short period of time, and eat more automatically next tick.

I think it would be good if self-purging was visible ("You see X vomit") because if people don't want others to see it, they can do it indoors and having it could be used to simulate diseases. I don't think we should have a vomit resource or an object because with the current mechanics the only way of getting rid of it would be through deterioration and implementing something more sophisticated would be needlessly difficult.
I think vomiting should have some sort of an effect, but for example preventing one from eating more for a day would be difficult, so if there's going to be an effect, it should be something simpler, like giving 5% hunger.

The downside of that is if they had 96% hunger already, vomiting could kill them. (Though, I guess only if they vomited between the eating and starvation ticks).
Maybe tiredness would be better, but a lot more than 5%.

I really want back the amount needed of the food/medicine you've chosen, to heal to 100%. I'm hating having to figure it out every time now.
I agree with no visible byproduct from vomiting, but that the act be seen, and some affect such as weakness or extra hunger would be great.
p.s. When will drunkenness be implemented? Will this be like right now, or are you talking about that for the future?
edit: Yes, reading what you said above, tiredness would likely be the better affect.

It already is. The Resources Department needs to assign intoxication values to foods, but the mechanism is in place.

Update:
-Eaten food that reduces the hunger or damage bars is converted to digested food and purged at the eating tick
-Eaten food that affects intoxication will have intoxication applied immediately. Healing/Nourishing effects are handled as described.
-Digested food is purged automatically at the eating tick
-Nourishing food is still automatically eaten if necessary

-At the eating tick, undigested nourishing food will be applied if hungry and then purged.
-Stomach capacity is 8000g
-Characters can manually purge their stomachs
-Amount needed to heal/nourish to 100% will be listed
-Self purging will create a visible event, but no product
Points of contention that need to be resolved:
I suggest self purging give 50% tiredness.

Can you define self purging please? Do you get the food back?

No, "no product" as Doug R. wrote. You just empty your stomach.

Slight off-topic but related to self-purging: once that's in place, will it be worked into current Cantr illnesses? There are already illnesses that require you to eat more; self-purging, in essence, does the same. Will it/should it replace 'eat more' ticks?

Purging in this case means vomiting, getting rid of stomach contents before they are digested. Thus it doesn't make a person any less hungry next time.
