Don't get me wrong. I love Rob's idea and it will certainly clear up a lot of what I would like to see. If what I want is totally out of the question, seeing Rob's idea implemented would be just fine.

Piscator wrote:The multiple choice system has been proposed before and I honestly don't like it at all. It heavily restricts your options to express your imagination to avoid a problem that isn't really one. Of course there will be abuse, but there's no fundamental difference between an emote and a free-form description. If someone mis- or abuses the description, he will likely do the same via notes, emotes or talking. Changes in self-descriptions are proposed to be monitored and after the initial phase it won't take more than a minute a day to check for abusive or CRB-ish content.
I agree entirely with this.

So monitored and approved self-descriptions upon creation of a character? Wouldn't that stop spawning being instant?

I don't think it would have to be upon creation. I'd like to be able to edit the field when new characteristics appear. I wouldn't want to start off saying I am a little butterball only to start off starving in the mountains for nearly a year.

Some things need to stay based on game mechanics. You can't be a chubby weaker than average expert fighter... That's a small fit type build.
So size is dictated by game mechanics.
Anyone who rp's opposite of their charries mechanical traits is guilty of bad rp in my opinion.
So far, there are scars, hair color, eye color, (for males: Facial hair), Hair styles, (maybe tattoos could be brought in)...
It's a lot to look at when approving something like that.

Who says I can't? There is way more to fighting than strength and muscles. I could RP that I am really weak, but good at finding vital spots on the body that do lots of damage.
If you make everything based on game mechanics than we are no longer really RPing. What I like about Cantr is that it gives me some freedom to play exactly the way I want.

What I'm saying is that some who types in "I'm a fat giant" in their description and they're an awkward fighter weaker than average... He'd be a skinny tall person at best, so the description given is false...
Therefore extremely misleading. Which I sort of view NOT as CRB but still a form of cheating.
As in, if I see you, I should see you, not what you think you are... Just like the playing a cat and thinking you're a cat scenario...
Edit: I don't hate the idea, just know that you probably won't be able to put your physical strength or anything already stated by game mechanics...

I still don't see how saying I am "a fat giant" has anything to do with my strength or ability to fight.
This guy doesn't look like he is very good at fighting.

Well maybe if you tried to take the hamburger away...

First of all
Holy crap that is funny!
Second, Maybe not, but he does look much stronger then average... But if some one wanted,

to be that guy, and they spawned Much Weaker than average, then they couldn't use the "Fat Giant" Description and it would need to be rejected...

I could just as easily imagine him finding it hard to even walk though, let alone fight. *though RPing dragging him around would he a bit of a stretch*
I don't want the field to be something that limits what players can say but gives them a means to be creative with their characters so we don't have a bunch of clones all carrying steel sabres, iron shields, and wearing hemp pants.
As I said, players are very good at giving their characters unique traits and personalities already. This field is just something that keeps them from constantly having to say in asterisks that they have black hair.

That's exactly the point. If someone wants to play his awkward fighting weakling as a two-meter giant (and I'm not even saying he shouldn't) he will do it whether or not a description field is available.
For clarification, new characters wouldn't be needed to be approved. Instead every time anybody changes his description(or creates it for the first time) the new (and original?) text would be added to a report that will be sent to the PD at the end of the day. You wouldn't notice if a character is played tall although he's weak, but you would be able to spot men with boobs, guys with eight arms, people who change their appearance from blond and tall to dark and small and just plain abusive content and spam. And if that's not enough, problematic content could still be reported in the old way, just like it is done with notes.

Maybe there could be a set number of basic body types and the player could pick between ones that match with the physical strength and fighting skill of the character. I would still want to include a free-form textbox but stuff written in it shouldn't be in conflict with the chosen body type.
I think if someone chose their character to be fat/stocky, it would be good if experience gained from fighting and hunting would be divided more to physical strength than fighting skill, and if small frame or tall but skinny was selected, experience would be directed more to developing the fighting skill than physical strength. But if you only get a very tiny amount of skill points per hit, there's not much room to play with. I think experience gains from fighting should be increased but that's another subject.
It would be a sort of a cube. On one axle there's height, on another axle there's fat and a third axle there's width or the size of bones. Physical strength and fighting skill would affect muscles. If someone would choose fat but not wide, with tall height they would mostly have the fat gathered in the stomach, while if they were short, they could be chubby in the way children are but still have narrow hips and shoulders. If someone was fat and wide and tall then they would be big in general, most likely at least medium strength since it takes muscle to move a big body, while if they were wide and tall but not fat, that would suggest high strength and potentially high fighting skill. And so forth.

I don't see how the "simple choice" option is so bloody over complicated.
READY FOR THIS?
Height: Short [] Tall []
Build: Thin [] Large []
Eyes: Light [] Dark []
Hair: Light [] Dark []
You DO NOT include specifics of actual frame ups (Actual size in relation to others) or colors. You allow some VERY SIMPLE selections which ALSO allow free form *emote noise* (which I found annoying and stupid, anyway) as well as avoid this "OH BUT HE'S NOT STRONG ENOUGH" bull crap.

Why can't there just be a description box. Seriously?
People will abuse it the same as they will abuse other things...
therefore
the only people who WILL abuse it are the people who abuse OTHER THINGS
And, it would probably generally make serious people a lot happier in-game.
What is the big controversy?
