There is something somewhat like this (in that it aims to lessen whispering) in the Accepted Suggestions. The 'speak to' option.

It would still flood the town with messages unlike this proposal, but at least they'd be readable unlike the wall of whispers that happen today.

This is a better idea yet! As for places with limited resource slots.. Tell me.. for those having public... sex... how are you chopping wood, or running a drill while you put this here and touch that there anyways...?

I've yet to see public sex, I think. I've seen whispering that might be though O.o?

Yes, I'm inclined towards this proposal also. It does have the complication of deciding what % of randomness is acceptable.

Should there be a random chance that a whisper is spoken aloud or should there rather be a chance that a character picks up what is spoken. In the latter case, not everybody would get to hear what is said (what would seem more realistic), but the chance of a private conversation being heard would also depend on the crowdedness of a location. If there's only one other char around, there's a 1% chance of your convo being heard, if there are 100 chars around, it's almost certain someone gets to hear it.

sometimes a public slip might be a good way to make things slow down when they get to heavy..

It would be relatively easy to allow a random amount of people to hear either the full whisper or a snippet of it, but if each person was supposed to hear a different snippet, that would require creating several events instead of one and that would be inefficient.

Hearing the whole whisper would be the easiest to program, since deciding how long the snippet(s) should be would be difficult and not including the full text would make it possible to display parts of an emoted sequence without the emote markers (asterisks), making it sound like something was said instead of acted.

I think it should be a random chance, but that all the cantrains hear. As said it would drastically reduce what is said in public whispers. I agree the chance could be based on the number of cantrians in the town. Sorry, but I am one of those who hate extensive public whispers. A few lines is one thing.... but a page full!?

I don't think that creating snippets would be necessary.

I must be the only person that really doesn't mind whispers. I even prefer them in some cases because that makes it easier to pick out important dialogue. There's always the search function of course, but I usually feel compelled to read everything that's been spoken aloud.

Good point. A filter option would probably be the best choice of all.

I don't think it makes any sense for the chance to be for EVERYONE to hear -- after all, when is the last time you were in a low conversation with someone and the whole room heard your comment? More likely that one or two people nearby overhears a line - so you move farther away.

Everybody hearing would only make sense if a person accidentally raised one's voice. I think it would be much more interesting if it was a random few people who heard it while the others got the standard "You see a man in his twenties talking to a woman in her twenties". That way anyone could claim they heard something, and there would be no way for others to prove if it was true or not, except if several people heard it. It could roll a chance of hearing for each listener, so in big towns the chance of someone hearing would increase. Any suggestions for a percentage?

I think a low percentage like 1-2% would work well, rolled to each individual charrie outside or inside whatever location they are at.

Even in small towns, ppl would hear once in a while.
