I also didn't agree with nothing on this topic before I read "On the beginning we didn't even have racks and smokers...". It's true. And it's was said to be the "golden times of Cantr" (well, for English..) We can live with it... so... suck it.
PS: the only real problem I see is for people who were on the seas with counted jerky meat and such...If they die, they should be revived...Or added meat before they die.

I think starving sailors would be a non forced scenario. They most often don't make rations and just eat everyday. Eating 5 of each 9 days would practically counter the change to jerky and smoked meat and let them travel as far as they planned.
