I like... but sails? do they need constant attention too? cause on a large expanse of water, one does not need to do much more than keep a boat on course, and that is not an all consuming process....

Perhaps you'd need a set sails project for when you change direction. Until you set your sails you travel much slower.
Steering ought to be a continous project as well, you can't let a sailing ship just cruise on its own because it simply turns into the wind and drifts.
Having specific jobs on board, like steering or setting sails, would give people more to do on board ships and make it more realistic giving an advantage to organised crews.

I'll confess that is my problem when I try to read through your suggestions. All of those errors overwhelm me and I miss the point or understanding what you're trying to say. I do try to muddle through as best I can if the title interests me or if I see other people responding (and kind of clarifies what you were trying to say in the first place). But sometimes it's just so hard. And then the constant text size change and all caps stuff doesn't help me read through it any easier. I do realize you've improved in your typing and don't make as many mistakes as before and that's helped a lot.

I give up when i see the amazing diversity of letter size.
And yes, setting sails... calls for more RP....
"Mr Bush, set the t'gallants and take the courses off 'er, we'el sail close hauled today"

Ok, I'd like to bring this topic back up.
To reitorate,
Adding sails would be much the same as adding a cabin, but they would add some extra speed to the boat in question, and when weather is implumented each sail would work differently with differen't angles of the wind. and if we add the option to "shorten sail" then that would make different strengths of wind work differen'tly on the sails.
and when this is implumented i suggest that we decrease the speed of all ships. becaus, well currently there isn't any alternative, but when this is implumented we will have a way to specialise sailing a bit.
And also, we should be able to have Oars too, that would also get more speed.

Just read through it all, and it looks good.
I like the idea of it being something optional you can add later - and the number would be limited depending on the boat size, very much like the way (I think, having never built a boat) cabins work. Thereby meaning you don't need a million different construction options.
I think it's a nice idea, adding to something we already have, rather than starting something completely different.
And I think that after more than a year of being discussed, it does deserve to be either accepted or rejected by the staff... no wonder Pie keeps bumping it when everyone is in favour but it never gets accepted!

Agree that the sails shouldn't be mandatory, but should add a bit of speed - and a lot of class
Also perhaps sails could be made out of materials other than cotton - for example hemp cloth or even a huge ton of hide.
Speed would be increase with those, just not as much as with cotton sails.
The more difficult bit would be if you wanted to replace your hide sails with cotton ones... maybe the sails could work like clothes on a person - you "dress" the ship in sails, and can "undress" it and put on different sails at a later date? Alternatively, perhaps you just can't replace them.

It could probably work as a two pronged (thingy) object. You make the mast, then make the sail. You can, like, hurt the mast with a knife or something, and it'll just get destroyed r something, and then you can add a differen't one.

I don't know what the deal is for masts and sails here cuz I didn't read the topic, but Im for masts and sails period if it will require extra materials needed for boats. I think there ought to be more to making a boat than there is, currently. They're too easy to build. They ought to require cloth and rope both.
Edit
As pointed out in a topic a while ago, it's my belief that part of the reason land suffers in chars is because people are sailing so much these days. Course we go and make it hard on land people by making cars require fuels but there hasn't really been any thing added to make sailing a bit more difficult, in fact it's being made easier with cabins and so many such things being able to be built on their decks. I don't give a damn if sails even make a difference in how the boat moves, but they ought to require rope and cloth.
