This is an interesting "game".
(how to play)

It is a cellular automaton made by British mathematician John Horton Conway. (more information)

Basically, you make a pattern on a grid, and watch what happens when you start it up. It's pretty interesting and kinda addictive.

Oh, I heard about this somewhere... exept I think that version had hexagons instead of a grid. On my second attempt there was a pattern that marched diagonally into the corner and vanished!

Yes, that happens sometimes. Moving patterns are called spaceships. There's different kinds, like the glider, which is small and moves diagonally. Spaceships that leave a trail behind are called puffers.

What's really fun is when you draw a random scribble, play it, zoom out to maximum, and without ever stopping it (but zooming in as necesarry) attempting to annihilate all life.

I did a (half-assed and lame) research project on this. Met Conway, too, but he doesn't like to talk about it.
