comment on word ping pong

Postby Jos Elkink » Fri Jul 22, 2005 6:21 pm

I think the word ping pong is kind of funny, but it also seems to become rather big and a bit of a waste of space :) ... Would it be an idea to set a limit - e.g. only 1000 words on a row and then just see where it ends ... and then once a chain is done, we create a separate thread for archival purposes stating the start and end, or every 100th word, and we remove the whole chain from the database? :) ... 3000+ posts in one thread stored in the db as just one word chain seems a bit of a waste :) ...

*shrugs* I used to read it and try to follow people's word choices when it was smaller, but it's too huge now to even attemp to try to follow.

meh.

I'm not really a fan of the ping-pong game; I've seen it played on too many forums and to me it's just one step up from post-slutting. And a small step, at that.

Well, it's not that *I* am going to organise this ;) ... It's just a kind of suggestion ... perhaps some CD member can intervene :)

Would people post in the word ping pong thread anymore if they knew the thread was going to be deleted later on? I thought the point of posting in the word ping pong thread was to easily increase one's post count. :P

But, yeah, good idea. . . .

I think it's going to be archived/deleted. There's nothing extremely important in there..unless you just..value the words?

I agree. I don't think people are going to be too offended when they find out that it was deleted.

Does it really soak up that much space?

I'm more than happy to delete it - as long as another can be started... ;)

I've got little to no experience with managing a php board - does deleting a post actually delete it from the server? I know that often, on other forum software, the mod's 'delete' option simply removes the thread from appearing, but the posts remain (i.e: If you 'search for all posts by...' they'll appear...) - thus making no difference to the space taken up...

And, no, it makes no difference if the post is deleted - the game is stupid. It's not one step away from post slutting - it is post slutting...

but - you see...
there in lies the fun of it all...

I think people might be upset when they lose 200 from their post counts...

deleting a thread doesn't remove that count from a persons' number of posts...

200? There are people with over 500 in there. I agree delete the posts and put the whores where they belong on the bottom of the top poster sheets.

Just record some stats about the thread ;) ... Like, start / middle / end words and number of words or something ...
