Patchwork Drawing Game

Postby joo » Mon Jun 02, 2008 5:45 pm

This is an adaptation of a pencil and paper game I used to play, but with a few more intracacies thanks to its digital setting. The aim of the game is for multiple people to come up with a full-frontal image of a character, the body parts of which are all drawn by different people. This is similar to my other game, Chinese Whispers, in that each participant cannot see what the others have drawn until the result is finally put together, and there is a host who sets out a template for the character and pieces all the separate images together.

You can use whatever media you want to create the image, but it has to fit the "joint" specified by the host: for example, if you are drawing an arm, it needs to join up properly to the shoulder. Ideally, you will draw your body part over the joint to make sure there are no unintentional "seams".

In addition to providing the template for the character, the host can also apply some restrictions on the nature of the body parts. If, for example, they all have to be human, then it would be no good drawing a mechanical arm. I will start by specifying a very basic template, with no detail on the joints - a starting test to see how it rolls, and it can be adapted from there.

Before posting a template, I will get people to "reserve" the body parts they want to draw, so that everybody can start at the same time. The body parts will be:

  • Head
  • Torso/Abdomen
  • Left/Right Arm
  • Left/Right Leg

The categories that contain slashes can be split between two people if there is enough interest.

Sounds interesting. But there's no mind in picking body parts before there is enough players to get it going.

Okay, so Seko's interested... anybody else? We really need at least 4 people to make it worthwhile.

I'm not quite sure I understand how it'll work but I can give it a go.

It's simple: each person draws one body part, and then they are all put together, to make a character.

I'd be willing to give it a try, too. Let's make Skuzzelbutt.

Okay, that's four now. We can go if everybody picks a body part from the list.

Ok, so now we need some guidance as to what we're actually gonna draw.

Seko, your avatar is depressing...

Here's a template for the character - the shaded parts are just for guidance, to give a general idea of the shape, but the parts which are outlined in black should retain their width, so that the separate images may be put back together. Feel free to draw over this image and submit that - I will resize anything else to make it fit.

So I can just draw any kind of pair of legs, no matter how bizarre?

Yes, that's the idea - just try not not to draw in the space where the arms, head or torso would be (I can always overlap, though) - and make them the right scale, so they would fit with the widths given. Also, you can use any medium you wish, as long as it's sent to me as a digital image.
