This thread seems to have reached a dead end, so let's change the rules a bit.
Each player will have to make a list of substitutions, changing the starting word into the target word, then give a new start and target word for the next player.
An example: suppose the puzzle is: red ==> green.
A solution could be:
red
reed
greed
green
And the new puzzle: start ==> end

At first I tried going from habit to habits, habitus, habitues, habitudes, habitude, but that wasn't going anywhere so I had to add a space to get somewhere.
