Actually, I've kept in period by calling for investigations-- although there was a lot of superstition in Victorian England, there was also a much greater emphasis on science, and London's first police force was formed in the mid-nineteenth century. Jack the Ripper was a heavily investigated case, albeit unsuccessfully. Nonetheless, there were great blind spots in criminal law-- for instance, the first and foremost suspects would be poor and male-- it would be unheard of to suspect a woman of committing murder using any weapon other than poison (this is how Lizzie Borden was acquitted, in fact-- no one believed it was possible).
I am trying to figure out why you'd like more "old English," though.... you must not be speaking of the language or literature known as Old English, which ceased existing as a living language sometime around 1066....
The "Love Hurts" song threw me.... I couldn't figure out how to politely say "But Dee, dear, that song won't be composed for another hundred years..." and then I just kind of wondered if we were going for a Moulin Rouge kind of thing (you know, wildly inappropriate music for the time setting....) and I let it drop.
Um. Quite. Yes, you all should ask the bookseller. But don't expect her to talk to anyone accusing her of murder.

Well, if you were one of the poor sob's who shelled out money to see "the league of extraordinary gentlemen" you would have an idea of the fictionalized characters that were set in that time period. Jekyl and Hyde is one example... Sherlock Holmes and Van Helsing were others... I think we have yet another dramatic role amongst us.
*smiles* I think it would be fairer to the spirit of the game if I didn't go out and blurt my hypothesis, although the more I think about it, the more I think I know what it is...

I agree we should try and keep it as close to reality (the reality of the 1880's in London that is) as possible but it's impossible to be 100% correct.
First of all we all have different amount of knowledge of what those times were like. I try to incorporate what I know in my character but I must admit I don't know that much and I don't have the time to do any research.
Secondly some of the things that we do know we have to ignore for the sake of the game. If no wealthy man or any women could ever be a suspect then the game wouldn't be that fun.
That's what I think anyway, feel free to disagree
