Webster's Random Word Linkage Game

Postby SekoETC » Sat Jan 20, 2007 2:14 pm

So, www.websters-online-dictionary.com offers a word of a day, a word of the hour and a word of the minute. I happened to notice that currently it goes:

Word of the Day: cocaine addiction
Word of the Hour: durable medical equipment
Word of the Minute: birth rate

I started thinking "now isn't there a connection between those words?" Coke addicts might end up in the hospital and wreck up the place, so durable medical equipment is needed in treating them. And many kids are born stoned because their mother is a junkie.

So the purpose of the game is to check the words (or to use the previous combination posted) and write a single sentence that contains all of the words. The one with the shortest sentence wins.

<pedant>
Doesn't this show a lack of knowledge of the Webster's site of its own dictionary? These are all more than single words. They aren't phrases exactly either, there's probably some term for them, but certainly not "Word of the..."

Ah, I feel better now.

Yeah, they're not real words this time, just "terms" which may contain several words. I think it looks them up at random. Now is someone gonna play or not.

Word of the Day: secured loan
Word of the Hour: metal detector
Word of the Minute: compliant

I got a secured loan so I could buy a metal decetor, but it didn't work and I filed a complaint.
I don't need a myspace; I spend enough time in other people's spaces.

Compliant is different from complaint. It's an adjective.

1. Disposed or willing to comply; "children compliant with the parental will".

2. Willing to carry out the orders or wishes of another without protest; "too acquiescent to challenge authority"; "a gentle and biddable soul"; "children compliant with the parental will".

3. Easily influenced or imposed on.

4. Evidencing little spirit or courage; overly submissive or compliant; "compliant and anxious to suit his opinions of those of others"; "a fine fiery blast against meek conformity"- Orville Prescott; "she looked meek but had the heart of a lion"; "was submissive and subservient".

Compliant PTA members were willing to take a secured loan in order to supply the school with metal detectors.

Car
Battalia
Janissary

A Battalia of Janissary troops shall be commanded by car.

Shortest by length or shortest by number of words? Could have a winner for both. Also, are we allowed to pluralize words(cars) or give them ownership (the car's windshield wipers)
