Now it's quite possible that there is some reason to this but it seems odd

Whilst sailding I have recently passed three ships, and been able to dock onto them, but I can't see any of them on my map, I'm in a dingy, is there any reason?

 No they're not ghostships, I know the people who are in one of them.... that is unless ghosts have taken over the ship

If you are in the same location as the other ship, you will see your orange dot, and not theres. Might that be what's happened?

Certain vessles are able to be docked to before they are visible on the map. Generally the bigger ones, but I haven't had exposure to a large number of vessles.

It's not necessarily the larger ones - thats just an artifact of the valid docking targets - they tend to be ships larger than the one docking .

All ships which can be docked to become available for docking at a range of up to 30 pixels - This applies to Coaster Harbours and Landing Stages as well. Valid Land locations become available for docking at distances of 20 pixels or less .

The width of the standard location map is 36 pixels centred on the current location . Therefore some docking targets may not be displayed on the map .

Lighthouses can be seen from much greater distances , up to 200 pixels (and recognised by name at 60 pixels).
