Timber
I have a character with a stone axe who can't gather timber. Shouldn't a stone axe work for timber? The wiki says it does, though IC doesn't, though I agree with the wiki.

It should and until recently it did. There has been some toying around with resources that cannot be gathered by hand, and I am guessing that it was forgotton when the tools were reassigned. Let me post a quick question in the RD forum and make sure there isn't some other reason. As of now, you should expect that it will be reassigned within the next couple days.

He changed it when we said. IC stone axes work for timber now. The why would be because it makes sense?

I've cut down a tree suitable for a small mast with a stone cleaver, I guess, since It didn't have a haft, so it's possible. How doesn't it make sense? Given the rates as what timber collection is possible with a stone axe, it seems to balance out things just fine.
Reality was never my strong point.
