There was a forum topic stuck at the top of general discussion? Anyone know what happened to it?

Most of the details are here: http://www.cantr.net/mwiki/index.php/Cantr_Chat_Channel

Basically, it's:
Server: irc.gnug.org
port: 6667
channel: #cantr

The java client might not work, and that can be for all manner of reasons, so it's best to use mirc for windows, or, my personal choice; X-Chat, for Unix

Some browsers (mozilla and firefox) have their own IRC clients add-ons.

If you can't work your way through mirc's options and get connected, let me know. Also, make sure that IRc is allowed by your firewall and antivirus (McAfee has an option that blocks all IRC traffic)

We've seen you in there, so chances are that you just have a patchy connection.

OK: no joy with:

Java, mirc, chatzilla iceirc or Xchat...

Java just wont connect but with the others I appear to be connected to the server, it accepts the command /join #cantr

but then nothing happens, peope report seeing me appear but that seems to be it.....

Any suggestions, anyone

P.S. I have been connecting to various other random servers and channels with no problems, (well except there are some very freaky chatrooms out there )

With X-Chat, open a new server tab (Ctrl + T)
Close any other tabs (they're listed at the bottom)

in the new tab, type
/server irc.gnug.org

wait for it to connect

then change your nickname if needed
/nick put_newnick_here

then
/join #cantr

If that's not working, then I can only imagine it's something with your connection
(check you're using the 6667 port)

Like farms, I got used to Xchat. There is a link to a windows program called X-Chat 2 which is essentially the X-Chat from 'Nix, except for windows.

It's what I use when I'm on windows, myself.

I think after about 4 hours of searching and fiddling it may relate to my use of trillian, it has an onbourd irc (that I never knew about) and it *may* be interefering, doesn't explain why I can use lodas of other servers and channells but not #cantr

Thanks for the help guys, having given half my weekend to thi I'm not giving up!
