Ghost Ships Don't move?

Here's what I've run across ...
I have a smaller boat docked to a larger boat of underminate size (just acquired it

). I go into the larger boat and set it to travel in a direction, at a speed, for infinity or untill it hits land. I then go back to the smaller boat to work on the list of projects I have set up in there.
And I don't go anywhere ...
If there is no one on board the boat when the movement ticks, is it's speed getting reset to zero? Is this a bug, intentional, bad programming logic, or what?
A further question. If a smaller boat is docked to a larger one, the smaller one can't dock to anywhere else at all?

I noticed this same thing, was sailing on two ships and went on the smaller one so that if it would magically get loose overnight, at least I'd be in a vessel that's capable of docking primitive shores. Anyway, when I went back on the ship in the morning, the speed was 0 and it hadn't moved at all.
Remember this suggestion?

Maybe it got implemented then. At least looks like it.
And you can't dock to something else while being already docked to another vessel because... well, that's the law. It's like that rooms only have one door
out, even though they might have several sub-rooms.

How can you sail a ship if you're not there?
In other words, yeah, it's intentional ...

Docked ships don't move unless they undock...docking entails movement...

OK, thanks for the information. It'd be nice if details like this were in the Wiki.
Now I know how I have to work to sail my boats. Now if I could just see what kind of boat I'm on without having to dock to land, or a landing structure.

Wait, wait, wait....
So let's say you're on Boat A, alone, and you dock to Boat B, which has no people on it.
If you go on Boat A, set it for direction and speed, and stay there, there's no one on Boat B. So Boat B wouldn't go anywhere...? Meaning Boat A wouldn't go anywhere?
But if you go back on Boat B, then Boat A is set to 0...?

If boat A is the boat docking to another boat, you will not be able to set direction and speed on it in the first place.

The bigger boat gets to choose direction and speed. Meaning the boat that was docked to.

It just does. I know this is probably way to late to change so this is just me talking, but since you seem to be using real life wouldn't a boat keep going even without a crew...doesn't mean the direction and speed will be constant but unless you have an anchor a ship will be moving.
I took a look at that thread and wonder why poeple wouldn't want a ship to just keep sailing, I mean, even if there was a spot where it would keep going without stop, it would be like that comet and something cool. I'm sure someone sent out a boat as a grave to keep floating and was meant to not be able to catch, now its just floating there....I just don't like boats not moving when no one is one it.

I think it makes the game much better, it allows people to loot dead ships, and keeps them from just disapearing altogether into some far off island where they ran aground, not to be found for 20 years. This way ships get reused when their occupants die.

Just because its easier doesn't mean its better. I liked it the other way....It gave people something to chase,

You're referring to drifting rather than sailing ... drift will be implemented someday, probably, but not before sailing maps are fairly accurate

Hm, but you know ships move, so since drift isn't implemented yet, its just better to keep the ships moving at whatever speed they were going...you know? *tries to get those ships moving again*

The economy of cantr needs all the stimulation it can get. This just makes it harder to get a boat again, stopping is much more fun and a better stimulant of the economy.
