Before anyone says anything, I know there's another IRC topic, but it didn't strike me to be the same exact issue.

Now, I use Compuserve, a subsidary of AOL, and I heard they share IP addresses or something like that, which may've helped to contribute.
I've written that under the friendly assumption that I wasn't "blacklisted' as was suggested on one of the pages. Now, if I was, perhaps some answers could be forthcoming, privately.

Are you quite sure 83.227.153.76 is your IP? It doesn't seem to belong to Compuserve, AOL, or any other ISP I've seen. Actually, it's in Sweden. Possibly you're using a proxy without knowing it? (cruddy explanation, I know - I just don't see any other possibility, unless the GNUG server is somehow broken)

Go to http://www.whatismyip.com/ to find out what your IP is.

it certainly seems that the gnug.org server has an issue with the proxy you are using

as Sho said, and indicated by the line:
[ua-83-227-153-76.cust.bredbandsbolaget.se]
that's a swedish server - owned by 'Bredband Bolaget' - homepage: http://www.bredbandsbolaget.net - a broadband provider in Sweden.

How that happens to be the proxy you are are using - I am not at all sure. It seems doubtful that AOL or compuserve would use a proxy based with a swedish company.

I'd see if you can change (remove) the proxy settings on your IRC client - or, possibly, it's with the global proxy settings on Windows or whatever OS you use.

You see, when I'm on my PC I have no issues and can just use the Java applet. However, when I'm on my laptop, I'm kept from the page through the applet and use this link that Moo suggested to me: http://www.polarhome.com/cgi-bin/chat/irc.cgi

Oh and yeah my IP is 64.12.116...and I use windows. It's not important I guess, I have no pressing need to really be on the chat, when I'm not on my PC. It'll be a good measure to keep me from digressing ;)

Well there's your problem.

Your not connecting trought your ip.
You're connecting trought the polarhomes server.

possible ways to fix it is to switch to mIRC or use another website.

I would be quite suspicious, actually, Nitefyre ... I mean, I cannot really find a good argument /reason why you would be using a proxy in Sweden. Maybe you have one, then it's fine ;), but otherwise it might be due to some spyware on your computer or even a fake ISP that is charging you money or something.

My aunt had this - some spyware set up her computer to connect to a different ISP which charged several dollars a minute or something - they lost about 500 euro and couldn't do anything about it afterwards.

This is probably far less dramatic, but it looks very suspicious nonetheless ...

Polarhome.com is listed as based in Stockholm, and its IP matches. That would seem to be all there is to this. Get a client (mIRC, Firefox or Opera's built-in clients, any of a dozen others) that runs on your own computer and not someone else's server.

Get firefox. It is by far the best browser I have ever used.

I used mIRC once, I mean way back when I think the first Cantr IRC chat was created, but it was all too complicated for me. I used that site that brought me through Stockholm because Moo suggested it worked well for my situation, and I tend to have blind trust in the CD when it comes to their knowledge in IRC.

I have Mozilla at home on my PC and that's what I use there. However, as I was writing my post, I tried using my internet explorer and surprisingly, this time it worked! I must've toyed with with the IE options or something since I last tried. :-P I'll just use that from now on and I hope I won't have any problems with it, since it's supposedly on my computer and all.

:D Due thanks for all the consideration (since I don't know the first thing about these types of issues).

No reason not to :)

The internet tends to be a fickle thing though, and what is good advice one month isn't the next.

I'm sure there's fairly straightforward details to connect to the IRC somewhere - I think they were added to the Wiki?

Ok, it's there but hidden under staff/cd - I've added links to the Community Portal Page
Go to:
Cantr Chat Channel - Cantr Wiki Article for details.

If people still can't connect (sparkle? :)) Please contact me and I'll try to sort things out
