for some reason everytime my char initiates a tomato gather project, it starts the activity, but he doesnt start doing it. If i click "participate" it says the project has the max number of participants. Am i just doing something wrong?

No bug; it's the gathering limits change, which was (might still be) the main topic of marginally civilized conversation on the forums a couple of weeks ago. Basically, you're going to have to wait for someone to vacate a gathering slot.
