I can't wait forever for the Programming Dept to help

...So what can I do to help myself?

When a bike warped on me ,I spent about threeCantrian years tracking it down and fetching back (I was told that it couldn't have warped, because there wasn't any bug at the location it vanished from- but it had. How else did it reappear, still locked at it's previous parking spot?)

When my anvill vanished, I built another (then I wound up with two, which both disappeared a few weeks later; so Iwaited for it to be fixed, the second time.)
.

When boats warp, people usually laboriously sail them back to where they'r meant to be, rather than sit there hoping that the entry on flyspray will finally get noticed

Now a newly built building has vanished, the moment the project was complete. I've reported it, but I notice that loads of older, equally urgent reports had been neglected, so I don't expect any action any time soon. It's urgently needed- so what can I do? Is there any point in starting again, from scratch? I need it badly enough to do that, and I'm sure that will be a whole lot quicker than waiting and keeping my fingers croissed. But will it just vanish again, if I do? Or might the Town wind up with two buildings of the same name (very awkward). And is s there some way of making sure that my next attempt doesn't vanish too?

Make sure there were no hypens in the name, that's a known bug that has made built objects disappear in the past.

Strenght, sister, I feel for you. Things like this really shouldn't be happening. If there's a bug concerning certain characters then it should be clearly told in the instructions. Doesn't the example even contain a hyphen? Making short names with no special characters should make things more safe. Buildings shouldn't just disappear, and it's not fair you would have to build it all over again just because of some unfortunate bug. It's strange how things like this seem to have increased recently though there was a time there weren't much warps or missing buildings at all. Now everything's gone unlogical, one day you'll probably wake up noticing you're on the other side of the world or even dead... Cantr gods work in mysterious ways.

Thank you very much Seko and Angespice. I really appreciate your responses. (Hey, I really felt for you, too over those boat warping problems, Seko. I almost posted a msesage to that effect, but felt, weell, kinda shy about it, I suppose)

In answer to your question: I don’t think I used a hyphen, but I might have. (Trouble is, I can’t check the syntax now it isn’t in the Projects List anymore ). I also think I might have used brackets, but I’m equally unsure about that. What I definitely remember using is the usual formatting code to highlight part of the name in bold. (inciuding the “<” and the “/” character, of course I suspect that was the culprit. I hesitated at the time, but when the formatting code worked OK on the projects list, I figured I must have got away with it, then added the resources,

I guess I’d better avoid all those characters now? There really should be a warning about them

PS. Oh, I used a comma as well, and it’s hard to figure out how to manage without one. Are commas OK? Or should they be avoided too?

Ummm…and does anybody know if brackets are OK, because I’m pretty sure I used brackets in another building project, somewhere else and it’s too late to cancel it now.

Bold text, now I'm pretty sure that's what caused your problem. I read about some people trying to make coloured buildings and they vanished. So avoid all html. The thing is in many places where it sees a < it ignores the rest of the line for some reason.

Yes, HTML is NOT permitted:

- In a vehicle name
- In a building name
- In the name of a namable machine
- On the title of a note
- When talking
- When whispering
- When naming someone (This is disputable...)

Blah blah.

In other words, use HTML ONLY in note bodies. No where else. No where. You may see places with different colour names and such, but those are from the times of old. Don't fiddle with HTML is the main thing. Only in note bodies. Only. Only only only. ONLY.

oh? html works with dynamic naming?

Yes and no. It does, for such things as <CHARDESC> or whatever the tag is, and bolding and stuff MAY work, but it'd just be better if you didn't play with it, and merely use the one tag for showing age only. ONLY. HISS! :P

Okay, but not everybody's going to read this thread, right? We need a great big huge notice about dangererous characters (erm...as in letters of the alphabet. No offence to the Prog. Dept. ) where nobody's going to miss it, or else people are just going to go on and on making the same mistake. In fact, we need that notice to come up whenever you start a building or vehicle project. At least you're not wasting loads of resources if you screw up a note header.

Hey...any chance of getting my 25 kilos of stone back, by the way? Don't worry, I'll still have made a big loss on the project, even if I do, because I've got to pay wages to the people who invested all that time in it. Getting the stone back would help to soften the blow, especially considering I paid through the nose for the stuff, because I wanted that building really fast.

Oh, and can I assumethere's no chance of the buildding suddenly reapperaing? If there is, I'll have to call mysecond attemp #2 , to avoid confusion (except I guess I better not use the hash either :( )

I've heard of some people getting buildings back once the name's edited. email the town and the exact name you named the building to bugs@cantr.net (I think that's the email address, but I am not 100% sure)

There is already a thread in this forum for disappearing veichles and buildings. What the title of this appears to me is "I'm more important than the other people up there, so can you help me first?"

The programming department are volunteers, like the rest of the staff. Yeah, they're kinda slow with fixing stuff. But if you want to play Cantr you just gotta deal with it, really. My favorite character died over a bug, but that's Cantr for you.

Perhaps someone can add this about buildings to the Wiki?

I thought it was long solved, actually, and that we were only fixing old building projects that are finished. But perhaps it's a much more common problem still ...

It's one of the most annoying problems to fix, since we have to search through logs of server scripts to check the validity of the claim that something was finished.

What kind of amoral, calculating question is that? ... It's just ethically better, not for someone in specific!

:P
