How do you use a tool for a project ? bug ?

I've managed to get hold of a sickle and was trying to use it in a project to harvest 7500g of rice. but I've not been able to add it to the project either when I was activley performing it or when it is sat there with no-one working on it.

When I go to my inventory and select the 'use this object on a project' and try to add it to the project get the following error

ERROR: This project does not need any object of that type.=

For information, the project was started by a character called Blaine in Miron Hills (east) on 1088-5

Tools are used automatically as long as they are in your inventory. The "use" button is generally for using resources / items on manufacturing projects.
