ERROR: You cannot eat to get strength.=
^^ i have 700 some grams of potatoes in my inventory and 93 strength. is it normal for me not to be able to eat potatoes under those circumstances? or do they need cooked or something? i read in another thread that a cantrian could survive on 2 kilos of potatoes a year so i was under the impression that i could eat them raw.

you can, as long as they are in your inventory
potatoes are a natural food source, you eat them automatically
some foods are healing, and you can eat them when you need to, such as onions, grapes, sugar, etc.

What Mavsfan said was true, but incomplete. Potatoes are a regular food, and can ONLY be eaten automatically. Healing foods like the ones he listed can ONLY be eaten manually to recover health. Spinage or spinach is a dual food. It can be eaten automatically or manually.
Suggestion!

I had the same problem in the beginning, Heather had a big explaining to do to convince Seko that potatoes don't have to be cooked. I think the error message should be changed into "This is not a healing food" or "This food is eaten automatically". But then there's the problem with meat, corn, wheat and such, they would have to have different text to note that they must be cooked. The current error message is quite shady, as if the char didn't have a skill to eat...

Well, I think the main point of one error message is to limit code and having to check the food catagory. But, as well, it could be interpreted as "needing to find out" what that food does in game, just like you need to find everything else out.
Although, I do agree, a player could end up having a character die just because they couldn't figure out the food system (Since they don't know about normal foods, healing foods, and cooked foods. They just see 'food' and think they eat it in some shape or form) - This, of course, is explained in the FAQ the differences of automatic food, healing, and cooking foods - but in no way am I permitted to tell what those are.
I do wish that perhaps the "EAT" button should only be applied to healing foods, and then leave automatic food and uncooked food alone so the player has to tell the difference between them on their own. Because, in essence, healing foods and normal foods are too similiar. If you had Bananas and Potatoes, they're both, to the players mind, food. So you'd think you'd be able to eat them both, but really you can't, and there's no way to tell them apart except with experimentation.
