Lock Question

Alright, so since it has been years since I played, I have forgotten how a couple of the game mechanics work. My question is this:

If I am on a raft by myself and there is a partially completed lock project that I did not start, what happens when if I complete it? Will it drop a key for me, or was the key dropped or given to whoever initiated the project? I don't want to complete the lock and then be locked inside the raft...? Can anyone refresh my memory on lock mechanisms in the game mechanics. They Wiki didn't really answer this question.
