My character is on a small boat. He can start docking to something, but cannot see the object to dock to. Is this correct? It feels a little strange.

Maybe you're exactly on top of it (if it's another ship), and if you don't have any binoculars or a telescope or such, it could be that it's a harbor and you're just out of sight from it.

Vessels at sea can see a coaster harbour up to 30 pixels away, Towns can be seen within 20 pixels.
