vanishing shield

one of my characters worked on an abandoned project for a wooden shield, upon completion i was there to login and pick it up so nobody could get it. but when i went to check, there was no shield anywhere and nobody had picked it up. is this something that can be fixed and if so will i be able to get the shield without someone else taking it because i may not be on when it suddenly appears from the thin air it disappeared into?
