What is oil used for?
A search for oil in the wiki site gives zero results.
Isn't there a list somewhere of all the items and what you need to make each one?

In my experience, not everything in the wiki is "searchable." Instead, you have to find it by looking through lists, or through pages you know will lead you to it. (Such as "fuel" instead of "oil.") I'm not sure why certain resources or items don't show up in a search while others do, and I'm not familiar enough with how wikis work to fix it myself. But, I wish I could.

Oil should be searchable, I just needed to look it up two hours ago and found it.

The thing about the wiki search is that if you push the "search" button, nothing ever comes up. If you click "go," it does a search, and you almost always find what you're looking for.

At the risk of sounding like a purist... it is possible to overuse the wiki, and sometimes more fun to try and have a char that doesn't come ready loaded with the wiki contents.
I have relatively young chars that still know very little of the cantr world... and can still be surprised by many things too.

Is combining the key then? Some of my chars are a little older and know most of the things.. But when you need to discover new things, and need machines for that, it's hard to no-know the machines!

Alright, I didn't actually check to see if oil was one of the ones that wasn't searchable, but I've stumbled across a couple terms that aren't and have had to Macgyver my route to an answer. I just assumed oil was one of them.

I don't think it's unreasonable to expect the oldrr chars to know stuff, and this could even be in principle, like 'build one machine... have an idea about maybe how to make another'... and so on.
I'm not saying that people should be complete blank slates, and some inherent knowledge is essential... hence the use of the term 'overuse'.
Often my spawns learn as they go, as they watch people... some have even been known (via game mechanics... i.e., hopping off projects for the tick) to prolong making things. Yeah, they learn fast yes, but I guess they have to.
Much in game learning is possible, and I just think it is more fun... and more of a challenge to play.

[edit] By the way... i just typed 'oil' (without the little ') into the wiki, and hit return and up popped the page for oil.

Re: What is oil used for?
I generally don't search the wiki but look under the categories. Never know what else you may spot of interest when scrolling through the list of resources, for example.
I like that it's left up to the player to determine how much or how little their chars know. My chars cover a wide spectrum of how much knowledge they start life with.... Maybe it's a certain type of tool, skill, item, etc that my chars might be an instant expert with but yet completely clueless about other things.

If you press the search button, you will get no results for "oil." My guess is that the wiki doesn't index short words. I expected that all page title words would be indexed, but apparently not.

Me neither. I always hit return.
So what does 'return' invoke on the wiki, that 'search' doesn't..?

If you hit 'Go' the wiki will try to find a page that matches it's name exactly to what you entered in the search field.
If you hit 'Search' the wiki will search in the content (and name) of articles for matches.
Hitting Enter will fire off a click on 'Go'.
And as someone suggested, three letter searches doesn't return anything because of the search term being too short.
