Is this normal? 3 times I tried and all three with 0 result. I am a lost soul here.

Elephants have a rather high natural damage resistance. If your damage potential is lower than the elephants resistance, you won't do any damage.

Are you wounded and/or weak? If yes, this might be the explanation.

Weak and wounded yes. Ok, since it is not a technical error , I will have to admit defeat in the face of those elephants.
