Is it really supposed to be possible only for one character to work these machines at a time?

I don't see why not. You can already produce a shitload of petrol in a day. It's unlikely that many groups could gather oil fast enough to have more than one person working on making petrol and if you did, you could build more than one of them.

One of my characters currently have over 600'000 grams of oil to process... And the town produce more oil than could be processed in one stack by far. I guess we could build more stacks, but it requires some resources quite scarse in the area. But possible, yes.

The project was designed as something like "automatic with supervision". In other words, the machine works by itself, but you need someone to watch the controls, check the temperature, adjust the gas flow etc.. A second person wouldn't help to make the process faster.
